Default Study Thread for trivia Team:Red.....SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!

Zanpakuto's and Shinigami
Spoiler
1st Division

Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Masaaki Tsukada (Japanese), Michael Sorich (English)
Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai (山本元柳斎 重國, Yamamoto-Genryūsai Shigekuni?) is the leader of the Gotei 13. He is an old man with a long beard. Despite his old age, he has a very muscular body. There are many scars on his torso and head, suggesting numerous battles in his past. He wears the standard Soul Reaper captain uniform, but its size is greatly exaggerated. He also drapes his haori over his back instead of actually wearing it. Yamamoto believes that laws must be upheld for the benefit of the community and despises those who break them. He founded the Soul Reaper academy about 2000 years before the main Bleach storyline,[6][7] where he personally instructed Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake. He thinks of the two as his own sons, and was proud of both of them when they achieved their captaincy.

Yamamoto's zanpakutō is Ryūjin Jakka (流刃若火, Ryūjin Jakka? roughly "flowing flame blade"). It is released with the command "all things in the universe, turn to ashes" (万象一切灰燼と為せ, banshō issai kaijin to nase?).[8] When released the sword, sealed as Yamamoto's staff, consumes him and the surrounding area in flames, earning it the title as the most powerful fire-based zanpakutō in Soul Society. The sheer power of the flame can disintegrate almost anything the sword is waved at. While able to easily fight two captains with Ryūjin Jakka, Yamamoto's spiritual pressure alone is strong enough to paralyze lieutenant-class Soul Reapers simply by releasing it. He is also able to use the technique called jōkaku enjō (lit. Blazing Fortress) to create a sphere of flame to imprison his enemies.

Chōjirō Sasakibe
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Taro Yamaguchi (Japanese), Michael McConnohie (English)
Chōjirō Sasakibe (雀部 長次郎, Sasakibe Chōjirō?) is the least seen of all the lieutenants, not being named in the manga until long after his first appearance. He wears a white jinbaori over his uniform and arm guards. In the manga, Chōjirō is illustrated without pupils, though in the anime he is depicted with yellow or light brown eyes. Chōjirō is enamored with British culture, and takes great strides to Westernize his life.[9] His zanpakutō is Gonryōmaru (厳霊丸, Gonryōmaru? roughly "solemn spirit"). When released with the command "bite" (穿て, ugate?, "pierce" in Japanese materials), Gonryōmaru transforms into a rapier. Its special abilities, if any, remain unknown. This is because Ichigo quickly dispatched Gonryōmaru after destroying Marechiyo Ōmaeda's released zanpakuto.

2nd Division

Soifon
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)
Soifon (砕蜂, pinyin: Sùifēng), born Shaolin Fon (蜂 梢綾, pinyin: Fēng Shaolíng), is a hard worker who believes strongly in following orders. She is generally reserved and does not hesitate to strike down her subordinates if they pose a challenge to her plans. In her childhood, she served as a bodyguard of Yoruichi Shihōin, with whom she developed a close relationship, eventually even becoming Yoruichi's protégé. After Yoruichi left Soul Society, Soifon was crushed and angered at Yoruichi's betrayal. In retaliation she trained to surpass her mentor, having replaced Yoruichi as the captain of the 2nd Division by the start of the series. Following her battle against Yoruichi in Soul Society in which she is defeated, she tearfully asks why Yoruichi did not take her with her. While Yoruichi's answer is not heard, Soifon seems to have forgiven her, the two's relationship has become somewhat of a running gag. Soifon consistently displays an obsessive, almost romantic, interest in Yoruichi. She likes anything resembling a black cat (a form Yoruichi can assume at will), often suggests that spending time with Yoruichi is the definition of fun, and displays jealousy should Yoruichi be in someone else's company. IGN has commented that Soifon and Yoruichi share one of the more interesting histories in the series, though feels more could have been done to flesh it out.[10][11]

Soifon's zanpakutō is Suzumebachi (雀蜂, Suzumebachi? literally "hornet"). When released with the command "sting all enemies to death" (尽敵螫殺, jinteki shakusetsu?),[12] it shrinks into a stinger that is worn on the middle finger of Soifon's right hand. Whenever it cuts an opponent, a butterfly symbol called a hornet's crest (蜂紋華, hōmonka?) spreads from the point of contact. Should Suzumebachi stab the same location again, the opponent dies. During her days training with Yoruichi, the crests could only be maintained for half an hour. Since then, she has improved to the point that the crests can never be removed unless she wills it.

Marechiyo Ōmaeda
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Shōto Kashii (Japanese), Lex Lang (English)
Marechiyo Ōmaeda (大前田 希千代, Ōmaeda Marechiyo?) is a large man with an equally large mouth who comes across as arrogant and dull. In an omake he is shown to come from a rich family, where he is revealed to have a comically long name, Marechiyo Yoshiayamenosuke Nikkōtarōemon Ōmaeda (大前田 日光田郎右衛門 美菖蒲介 希千代, Ōmaeda Nikkōtarōemon Yoshiayamenosuke Marechiyo?). He looks very similar to all of his family members except for his sister who, though considered normal-looking and sweet by most characters, Marechiyo considers ugly.[13] Other characters suspect that he received his position as a lieutenant because of his family's influence, as he is usually seen eating or picking his nose. Despite these negative qualities, Marechiyo is a kind person who enjoys beadwork and who paid for the renovation of the 2nd Division headquarters with his own money.[14] Marechiyo's zanpakutō is Gegetsuburi (五形頭, Gegetsuburi? roughly "five heads"). When released with the command "crush" (打っ潰せ, buttsubuse?), it transforms into an oversized spiked ball and chain. Its special abilities, if any, are unknown, as it is quickly destroyed by Ichigo Kurosaki the only time it is released.

Former officers
Former Captain: Yoruichi Shihōin (四楓院 夜一, Shihōin Yoruichi?)
Yoruichi is the captain of the 2nd Division during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. She abandons her post when she aids Kisuke Urahara in leaving Soul Society

3rd Division

[edit] Izuru Kira
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Grant George (English)
Izuru Kira (吉良 イヅル, Kira Izuru?, romanized as "Iduru" in Bleach Official Character Book SOULs and other Japanese sources) is a friend of Momo Hinamori and Renji Abarai from their days in the Soul Reaper academy. They are often seen spending time together, and all joined 5th Division together. Though no longer in the same division, Kira is loyal to both his friends and his duties, perhaps to a fault. He defends his captain from a grief-stricken Hinamori, and later calls himself a "monster" raising his sword against her. In the anime he is the first in the 3rd Division to accept their new captain, Shūsuke Amagai, and tries to convince his peers of Shūsuke's trustworthiness but is somewhat skeptical of 3rd Seat Kifune.

Kira's zanpakutō is Wabisuke (侘助, Wabisuke? roughly "miserable man", translated in the English manga as "the penitent one"). Its release command is "raise your head" (面を上げろ, omote o agero?). When activated, Wabisuke's blade bends into a squared hook. In this form, Wabisuke doubles the weight of whatever it strikes. The effect is cumulative, so each following hit exponentially increases the weight of the target. Thus, after seven or eight blocked attacks, his opponents are unable to lift their own swords. Once Wabisuke's effect becomes noticeable, Kira's opponents often fall to their knees with their heads bent down, as if in apology, thus the name of his zanpakutō.

[edit] Makoto Kibune
Rank: 3rd Seat
Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa
Makoto Kibune (貴船 理, Kifune Makoto?) is added to the 3rd Division during the anime's The New Captain Shūsuke Amagai arc. He bears a strong resemblance to the arrancar Szayel Aporro Granz, but with brown hair and a calm, collected personality. He wears the standard Soul Reaper uniform with a purple sweater underneath and purple-rimmed glasses. Before his assignment to 3rd seat of the division, he was under Shūsuke Amagai's patrol group, and both of them know each other well. While he outwardly appears friendly towards his subordinates, he is highly intolerant towards failure, calling those who fall in battle 'trash', similar to the arrancar Ulquiorra Schiffer, and also seems to blame Izuru for being too "soft" to stop Gin's defection. He appears to be in the employ of Gyōkaku Kumoi. though his exact role in Kumoi's plans is unclear. His zanpakutō is Reppū (烈風, Reppū? literally "gale"), and is released with the command "rage violently" (荒れ狂え, are kurue?). In its shikai form it is a large, three bladed weapon, which he can telekinetically control, allowing him to attack enemies from any direction.

[edit] Former officers
Former Captain: Rōjūrō "Rose" Otoribashi (鳳橋 楼十郎, Ōtoribashi Rōjūrō?)
Rose is the captain of the 3rd Division during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. He leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

Former Captain: Gin Ichimaru (市丸 ギン, Ichimaru Gin?)
Gin was once the lieutenant of the 5th Division, but by the time of the start of the series he is captain of the 3rd Division. He joins his former captain, Sōsuke Aizen, in defecting from the Soul Reapers at the conclusion of the Soul Society arc.

[edit] 4th Division

[edit] Retsu Unohana
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)
Retsu Unohana (卯ノ花 烈 or 卯の花 烈, Unohana Retsu?) is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman. She wears the standard Soul Reaper captain's uniform with long sleeves, and wears her hair in long black braid to the front of her neck rather than the back. She uses honorifics when addressing everyone, including her subordinates, and rarely shows panic or distress. Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake treat her as their senior, implying she may have been a captain or at least involved in Soul Society longer than either of them. As the head of the 4th Division, Unohana is usually tasked with healing others, commonly treating the most severe injuries. Though she is always polite to her patients, anyone who tries to leave her care before they are discharged are promptly scared into submission merely by her presence.

Unohana's zanpakutō is Minazuki (肉雫唼, Minazuki? roughly "purify the flesh"). In sealed form, Minazuki is slightly longer than ordinary katana, and resembles a nodachi. Instead of tying it to her obi, Unohana carries her zanpakutō over her shoulder by a rope strap or lets Isane carry it for her. When unsealed, the entire sword transforms into a giant, flying, one-eyed manta ray. It has the ability to heal people by swallowing them. When Unohana reseals Minazuki, it dissolves into green mist and reforms into the sheath of her zanpakutō. Though the series never shows her performing the actual release, Bleach Advance: Kurenai ni Somaru Soul Society labels this form as Unohana's shikai.

[edit] Isane Kotetsu
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Yukana (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)
Isane Kotetsu (虎徹 勇音, Kotetsu Isane?) is the older sister of Kiyone Kotetsu. Unlike Kiyone, Isane is generally quiet and observant, though she shares her sister's sense of loyalty. She looks to Unohana as a mentor and mother figure. It is noted by Unohana that Isane suffers from frequent and recurring nightmares. This is sometimes used as material for jokes, as Isane's nightmares are often odd or whimsical in their contents. For example, she once had a nightmare involving fish paste.[15] Isane's zanpakutō is Itegumo (凍雲, Itegumo? literally "frozen cloud", translated in the English manga as "frozen snow"). The guard is shaped like a snowflake. When released with the command "run" (奔れ, hashire?), two smaller blades protrude from Itegumo's hilt at 45° angles. Its special abilities, if any, remain unknown as she was quickly knocked unconscious by Ichigo the only time it is released.

[edit] Hanatarō Yamada
Rank: 7th Seat
Voiced by: Kōki Miyata (Japanese), Spike Spencer (English)
Hanatarō Yamada (山田 花太郎, Yamada Hanatarō?) is the leader of the 14th Relief Squad of the 4th Division. Hanatarō is very timid and nervous, and he tends to be clumsy and easily duped. Despite this, he is shown to be very bold at times, as he risks his standing as a Soul Reaper to help Rukia Kuchiki escape execution. Instead of his zanpakutō, Hanatarō usually carries around a 4th Division medical pack on his back that he uses to heal others in the field. Though he does possess a zanpakutō, named Hisagomaru (瓠丸, Hisagomaru? "gourd"), he tends to misplace it as he rarely needs to use it. Hisagomaru is released with the command "fulfill" (満たせ, mitase?). When it strikes an opponent, Hisagomaru heals their wounds rather than causing them damage. A red gauge on the blade then fills depending on the severity of the healed wound. Once the gauge is filled Hisagomaru, upon Hanatarō's uttering of the release command, transforms into a scalpel and changes its name to Akeiro Hisagomaru (朱色瓠丸, Akeiro Hisagomaru? "crimson gourd"). In this state, it is able to concentrate the combined damage of all the wounds it has healed into a single devastating attack, and subsequent attacks are able to cause harm, though its size in its released form makes that difficult. When the sword releases the combined damage it is enough to stun a Gillian-level menos.

[edit] 5th Division

[edit] Momo Hinamori
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Kumi Sakuma (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)
Momo Hinamori (雛森 桃, Hinamori Momo?) is an upbeat and easy-going girl who is generally quite trusting, if not naïve. She is a childhood friend of Tōshirō Hitsugaya, who called her "bed-wetter Momo" in retaliation whenever she called him "Shiro-chan" ("Lil' Shiro" in the English dub), literally meaning "Whitey". She befriended Izuru Kira and Renji Abarai when she joined the Soul Reaper academy, and the three later joined the 5th Division under Sōsuke Aizen. Being the only one of them to have stayed with the division, Hinamori greatly admires Aizen, still believing he is a good person even after he tries to kill her and subsequently betrays Soul Society, suggesting that Gin is controlling him. Her appearance is fairly ordinary compared to other Soul Reapers; she wears her hair up in a bun with a cloth wrapped around it and tied with a ribbon.

Hinamori's zanpakutō is Tobiume (飛梅, Tobiume? literally "flying plum tree"). When released with the command "snap" (弾け, hajike?), Tobiume's blade straightens and produces several jitte-like prongs along its length. In this form, Tobiume acts as a focus for Hinamori's spiritual power, concentrating it into energy bursts capable of cratering floors and breaching walls. She can also compress her power into massive energy balls and toss them from the blade's tip. Hinamori is very talented with kidō.

[edit] Former officers
Former Captain: Shinji Hirako (平子 真子, Hirako Shinji?)
Shinji is the captain of the 5th Division during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. He leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

Former Captain: Sōsuke Aizen (藍染 惣右介, Aizen Sōsuke?)
Aizen was once the lieutenant of the 5th Division under Shinji Hirako. He replaced Shinji as captain of the division sometime after Shinji became a vizard. He defects from the Soul Reapers at the conclusion of the Soul Society arc, fleeing to Hueco Mundo.

Former Lieutenant: Gin Ichimaru (市丸 ギン, Ichimaru Gin?)
Gin was once Sōsuke Aizen's lieutenant before becoming the captain of the 3rd Division.

[edit] 6th Division

[edit] Byakuya Kuchiki
Rank: Captain
Byakuya Kuchiki (朽木 白哉, Kuchiki Byakuya?) becomes captain of the 6th Division sometime after his grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki, vacates its captaincy.

[edit] Renji Abarai
Rank: Lieutenant
Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次, Abarai Renji?) begins his Soul Reaper career in the 5th Division, but is transferred into the 11th Division and eventually moves to the 6th to become Byakuya Kuchiki's lieutenant.

[edit] Former officers

Former Captain: Ginrei Kuchiki (朽木 銀嶺, Kuchiki Ginrei?)
Ginrei is the captain of the 6th Division and the head of the Kuchiki family during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. His grandson, Byakuya Kuchiki, eventually replaces him as captain and head of the Kuchiki family.

[edit] 7th Division

[edit] Sajin Komamura
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (Japanese), Kim Strauss (English)
Sajin Komamura (狛村 左陣, Komamura Sajin?) is an anthropomorphic canine. He is initially very self-conscious about his appearance, wearing a large helmet that concealed his entire head. After his fight with Kenpachi Zaraki (during which his helmet is destroyed), he gains enough confidence to go without the helmet. His canine appearance is often the source of jokes; for example, when his lieutenant asks where to find a bathroom, he appears to direct him to a fire hydrant, though he is in fact pointing at a bathroom just around the corner. Komamura has a close friendship with Kaname Tōsen, and is shocked when the latter chooses to defect from Soul Society, feeling that his friend has abandoned his morals. Komamura resolves to awaken Tōsen with his own hands.

Komamura's zanpakutō is Tenken (天譴, Tenken? literally "divine punishment", translated in the English manga as "sword of heavenly retribution"). It is released with the command "roar" (轟け, todoroke?). Once released, Tenken creates various body parts of a giant to copy whatever body part Komamura moves; for example, should Komamura swing his sword, a gigantic disembodied arm wielding a sword appears and does the same thing. Tenken's bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō (黒縄天譴明王, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō? roughly "king of black-roped divine punishment", translated in the English manga as "divine retribution, black ropes of ruination") brings forth the entire giant, which also copies Komamura's movements.

[edit] Tetsuzaemon Iba
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Rintarou Nishi (Japanese), Steve Cassling (English)
Tetsuzaemon Iba (射場 鉄左衛門, Iba Tetsuzaemon?) is originally from the 11th Division, having transferred once determining he would never be promoted to lieutenant had he stayed. As a result, his former compatriots look down upon him. Despite this, Iba has a habit of hanging around their division's headquarters, and he still enjoys a good fight. Iba has a distinctive hair cut and wears black sunglasses with his standard Soul Reaper uniform. He also smokes, thus somewhat resembling a typical yakuza gangster. He has a large tattoo on his back consisting of a cat on fire and kanji meaning "inviting luck" (招福, shō***u?). He and Ikkaku Madarame seem to have something of a working relationship, though it consists mainly of them dueling, drinking sake, then dueling again to see who has to get more.

Iba is well-rounded in both swordsmanship and kidō, only because it made becoming a lieutenant easier. The name and abilities of Iba's zanpakutō are unknown, as well as its release command. It takes the form of a tantō when sealed, and he usually keeps it inside his Soul Reaper uniform with the hilt sticking out. In its shikai, Iba's zanpakutō extends into a falchion or a large bladed scimitar with a pick-like protrusion a short distance below the tip of the sword.

8th Division

[edit] Shunsui Kyōraku
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Akio Ohtsuka (Japanese), Steve Kramer (actor) (English)
Shunsui Kyōraku (京楽 春水, Kyōraku Shunsui?) is a laid back and flamboyant man, evident in his style of dress and general attitude. He wears a straw hat and a pink flowered haori over his captain's uniform. In his off time, he can be seen drinking sake and napping. Other times, he likes to chase after women, particularly his lieutenant. Kyōraku tends to use a more familiar speech style than most other characters in Bleach; he generally refers to his fellow captains and Soul Reapers by their first name followed by an honorific. Kyōraku is a peace-loving man who will always try to find a nonviolent solution, though he doesn't wish to insult opponents by refusing to fight. He and his friend Jūshirō Ukitake are two of the oldest captains in the Gotei 13. They both trained under General Yamamoto, who Kyōraku calls Old-man Yama (山じい , Yama-jī?).

Kyōraku's zanpakutō is Katen Kyōkotsu (花天狂骨, Katen Kyōkotsu? roughly "flower-heaven bone of madness"). His zanpakutō is unique in that it exists as two completely separate swords, being as a daisho sword pair. It is released with the command "Flower wind rage and flower god roar. Heavenly wind rage and heavenly demon sneer" (花風紊れて花神啼き天風紊れて天魔嗤う, hana kaze midarete, kashin naki, tenpū midarete, tenma warau?). In Katen Kyōkotsu's released state, the daisho sword pair transforms into two large scimitars or falchions. While the anime and manga have yet to depict what special abilities Katen Kyōkotsu possesses, some Bleach video games portray it as having wind manipulation abilities.

[edit] Nanao Ise
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)
Nanao Ise (伊勢 七緒, Ise Nanao?) is a very serious and pragmatic person, which is at odds with her captain's silly antics. Despite this, she is extremely respectful of her captain and follows his instructions without hesitation. Nanao is often accosted by her captain, whose teasing takes various forms. Nanao's usual reaction is to scold him or hit him with something, usually a fan. When she is particularly annoyed she takes off her glasses. Though her face has never been seen while doing so, this act is apparently quite frightening, as most characters who see it are reduced to gibbering wrecks just by witnessing it. She has been with the 8th Division since she was a small child, and she enjoyed reading with former lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru. Not much is known about Nanao's zanpakutō and she is very rarely seen with it. An illustration in the art book "All Color but the Black" reveals that her zanpakutō takes the form of what appears to be either a wakizashi or tantō, which she seems to conceal within her sleeve.

[edit] Former officers
Former Lieutenant: Lisa Yadōmaru (矢胴丸 リサ, Yadōmaru Risa?)
Lisa is the lieutenant of the 8th Division under Shunsui Kyōraku during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. She leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

[edit] 9th Division

[edit] Shūhei Hisagi
Rank: Lieutenant; acting Captain
Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), Steve Staley (English)
Shūhei Hisagi (檜佐木 修兵, Hisagi Shūhei?) is an extremely mature and calm individual. He usually seen wearing what appears to be a choker around his throat with a matching armband on his right arm. As a child he was saved by the then 9th Division captain, Kensei Muguruma. In later years Shūhei got a 69 tattoo on the left side of his face, matching the one Kensei has on his stomach. Once entering the Soul Reaper academy, his prodigious talents allowed him to join the Gotei 13 without completing his education. While acting as an instructor at the academy, Shūhei's group was attacked by a hollow, and in fighting it he received a distinctive scar consisting of three vertical lines. After his captain, Kaname Tōsen, defects from Soul Society, Shūhei assumes the duties of his captain as an acting replacement. Tōsen's betrayal greatly surprises him, as they both shared an almost virtuous philosophy. Shūhei's zanpakutō's name and release command have not been revealed, but the second Bleach movie suggests that its shikai is some sort of crystalline rod or staff.

[edit] Former officers
Former Captain: Kensei Muguruma (六車 拳西, Muguruma Kensei?)
Kensei is the captain of the 9th Division during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. He leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

Former Lieutenant: Mashiro Kuna (久南 白, Kuna Mashiro?)
Mashiro is the lieutenant of the 9th Division under Kensei Muguruma during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. She leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

Former Captain: Kaname Tōsen (東仙 要, Tōsen Kaname?)
Tōsen becomes captain of the 9th Division sometime after Kensei Muguruma leaves Soul Society. He joins Sōsuke Aizen in defecting from the Soul Reapers at the conclusion of the Soul Society arc.

[edit] 10th Division

[edit] Tōshirō Hitsugaya
Rank: Captain
Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎, Hitsugaya Tōshirō?) is the captain of the 10th Division, and the youngest captain in the history of Soul Society.

[edit] Rangiku Matsumoto
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Kaya Matsutani (Japanese), Megan Hollingshead (English)
Rangiku Matsumoto (松本 乱菊, Matsumoto Rangiku?) is a strawberry-blonde woman renowned for her large breasts. She makes no efforts to hide them, wearing loose-fitting robes that expose much of her cleavage, using them to try to win over male characters, and using them as a topic in casual conversation. She is very carefree and lazy, usually avoiding the jobs of a lieutenant so that she can sleep or go drinking. Despite her avoiding her responsibilities, Matsumoto can be serious when need be, and often gives important and useful advice. She tends to many equal- or lower-ranking individuals in the familiar, referring to Ichigo, Orihime, and several fellow lieutenants by first name. Matsumoto has known Gin Ichimaru since they were children, and spent much of their childhood living together and looking out for each other. They remain close after joining the Soul Reapers, though she is surprised when he later betrays Soul Society. She recruited her captain, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, into the Soul Reapers and the two have grown quite close ever since. She has an unwavering loyalty and devotion for him and frequently tries to get him to lighten up and have some fun. Matsumoto's zanpakutō is Haineko (灰猫, Haineko? literally "ash cat"). Its guard is in the shape of a cat's head. When released with the command "roar" (唸れ, unare?), it dissolves into ash, which Matsumoto can then control to cut through objects as easily as a sword would. Because Haineko is just as lazy as herself, Matsumoto has had difficulty achieving bankai.

[edit] 11th Division

[edit] Kenpachi Zaraki
Rank: Captain
Kenpachi Zaraki (更木 剣八, Zaraki Kenpachi?) is the most recent captain of the 11th Division. Like all of his predecessors, he has earned the title of "Kenpachi"; the best warrior among all of the Soul Reapers.

[edit] Yachiru Kusajishi
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Hisayo Mochizuki (Japanese), Stevie Bloch (English)
Yachiru Kusajishi (草鹿 やちる, Kusajishi Yachiru?) is child-like in most respects, as she is small, cheerful, and carefree most of the time. She was found as an infant by Kenpachi Zaraki who, despite being drenched in blood, did not frighten her. He named her "Yachiru" in memory of the only person he ever admired, and "Kusajishi" from the district in which she was found. Since that day she has spent much of her time clinging to his back for transport. Like Zaraki, she has no sense of direction, even though he relies on her to find his way. Yachiru resents being criticized in any way and will often attack the perpetrator in comical fashion. Further reflecting her child-like nature, Yachiru likes to give people nicknames; for example, she calls her captain Ken-chan ("Kenny" in the English version). She also tends to give others random placeholder names. Various omake chapters and character profiles show that Yachiru has a love for candy, which is often used by other characters to make her leave them alone.

Despite her child-like appearance, Yachiru is apparently quite strong, since she is strong enough to lift Kenpachi and leap between buildings while carrying him. She is also very fast for her size. She can emit a large amount of spiritual power when angry, which forms into a large, pink, angry cat face, as opposed to her captain's, which forms as a skull. The name and ability of Yachiru's zanpakutō are both unknown. She carries her zanpakutō around with a loose cord, rather than at the sash of her uniform, and its guard is shaped like a flower. Her zanpakutō's scabbard is also unusual in that it has a pair of wheels for transport (installed by Ikkaku Madarame after continued pestering).

[edit] Ikkaku Madarame
Rank: 3rd Seat
Voiced by: Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japanese), Vic Mignogna (English)
Ikkaku Madarame (斑目 一角, Madarame Ikkaku?) is a bald, battle-loving man. His lack of hair is often the source of jokes for other characters, who confuse the sheen of his head with the light of the moon. He fought and was defeated by Kenpachi Zaraki sometime in the past, though was strong enough to survive the battle. Once Zaraki became captain of the 11th Division, Ikkaku and his friend Yumichika Ayasegawa joined the Soul Reapers so that they could fight and die under Zaraki's command. He shares a number of similarities with his captain; he feels insecure if he doesn't have a sword, prolongs battles so that he can get as much enjoyment from them as possible, and smiles near-constantly when fighting for his life. He is purportedly the second strongest man in the division.[16] Although Renji remarks that he is easily powerful enough to be a captain and that following the defection of Aizen and his comrades Ikkaku could easily replace any one of them, he insists his one mission in life is to die under the command of Zaraki.

Ikkaku's zanpakutō is Hōzukimaru (鬼灯丸, Hōzukimaru? referring to the Japanese name for the winter cherry, which translates to "demon light"). Though ordinary in appearance, he stores a blood-clotting ointment in its hilt. When released with the command "extend" (延びろ, nobiro?), it transforms into a naginata with a wax wood shaft.[17] While he usually treats it as such, he can also turn it into a three section staff with the command "split apart" (裂けろ, sakero?), surprising the opponent. Ikkaku has achieved bankai, though he keeps this a secret to most characters so that he isn't pressured to become a captain. Hōzukimaru's bankai, named Ryūmon Hōzukimaru (龍紋鬼灯丸, Ryūmon Hōzukimaru? literally "dragon-crest demon light"), takes the form of three oversized weapons: a blade resembling a Monk's spade in his right hand, another resembling a Guan dao in his left, and a fan-shaped blade, adorned with a carving of a Chinese dragon, which floats behind him, all connected by lengths of thick chain that Ikkaku can wield with ease. Aside from the increase in power, his bankai offers no special abilities, and is noted to be unusual for a bankai in this respect. As a fight progresses, the dragon crest will slowly begin to glow crimson, increasing its power as it does so. Ikkaku states that this is because Hōzukimaru, unlike his wielder, is "a lazy bum," and must be woken up in battle before it can reach full power.

[edit] Yumichika Ayasegawa
Rank: 5th Seat
Voiced by: Jun ***uyama (Japanese), Brian Beacock (English)
Yumichika Ayasegawa (綾瀬川 弓親, Ayasegawa Yumichika?) is the narcissist friend of Ikkaku Madarame. The two joined the Soul Reapers so that they could serve under Kenpachi Zaraki. Yumichika wanted to become the 3rd Seat, as he thought three (三 san) was the most beautiful kanji. Since Ikkaku took that position, Yumichika settled for 5th Seat, thinking that 5 (五 go) looks almost like a 3 and that the kanji for 4 (四 shi) looks ugly. He has colorful feathers on his eyelashes and eyebrow, and shiny skin and hair, giving him a rather womanly appearance in the early manga. Yumichika judges everyone and everything by beauty, and is also incredibly vain.

Yumichika's zanpakutō is Fuji Kujaku (藤孔雀, Fuji Kujaku? literally "wisteria peacock"). When released with the command "bloom for me" (咲け, sake?), it takes the form of a sickle-shaped blade, distinguished from the khopesh by the cutting edge being located on the inside. A hinge at the hilt allows Fuji Kujaku to split into four identical blades. Since the 11th Division has an unspoken rule that zanpakutō are only to be used for direct attack, Yumichika keeps it secret that Fuji Kujaku is a kidō-type sword. By using the command "split and deviate" (裂き狂え, sakikurue?), Fuji Kujaku flares up and takes the appearance of many peacock feathers, after which it drains the opponent's spiritual pressure and apparently replenishes his own (the one time he uses it, Yumichika returns from the battle with his wounds healed and more energetic than when it began). He's trying to learn his bankai, but because Fuji Kujaku is just as narcissistic as himself, Yumichika has had difficulty getting along with it, making bankai a challenge to achieve.

[edit] Former Officers

[edit] Maki Ichinose
Voiced by: Susumu Chiba (Japanese), Sam Riegel (English)
Maki Ichinose (一之瀬 真樹, Ichinose Maki?), introduced during the anime's Bount arc, left the 11th Division after Kenpachi Zaraki killed the previous captain. He traveled the human world, but one day, while in a weakened state in a desert, he fell upon a hollow that almost killed him; the hollow was subdued by Jin Kariya, who allowed Maki to kill it. Maki swore his loyalty to Jin after that, only breaking the vow once to fight Zaraki. He helps the Bount by infiltrating Soul Society, though is turned on by Kariya once his purpose is fulfilled and killed. His zanpakutō later helps in Kariya's defeat, acting as a lightning rod for Kariya's attacks.

Maki's zanpakutō is called Nijigasumi (虹霞, Nijigasumi? literally "rainbow mist"). It is released by the command "shine brightly" (光華閃け, kōka hirameke?). In its shikai stats, Nijigasumi glows with rainbow colors and has the ability is to control light for various purposes. It can make Maki turn invisible or douse the area in light, both playing havoc with opponents' counterattacks. It can also use light offensively, creating blades of light to cut an opponent. Finally, in its Saigyoku Nijigasumi (彩玉虹霞, Saigyoku Nijigasumi? roughly "colored orb rainbow mist") form, it can compress light around an opponent, crushing him.

[edit] 12th Division

[edit] Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Rank: Captain
Mayuri Kurotsuchi (涅 マユリ, Kurotsuchi Mayuri?) was once the 3rd Seat of the 12th Division, having been recruited by then captain Kisuke Urahara to help him with his research. He replaced Urahara as captain sometime after Urahara left Soul Society.

[edit] Nemu Kurotsuchi
Rank: Lieutenant
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Megan Hollingshead (English)
Nemu Kurotsuchi (涅 ネム, Kurotsuchi Nemu?) is the artificially created daughter of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, a combination of his research in artificial bodies (義骸, gigai?) and artificial souls (義魂, gikon?).[18] This past has driven her to become rather introverted and melancholic, preferring to stay silent in her captain's presence. Their relationship is far from the average father-daughter one, as Mayuri doesn't seem to care much for Nemu's well-being (using her as bait in combat). The most that can be said in his favor is that he has occasionally implied concern over her life as a point of personal pride in his own skill as her creator. Despite being abused and mistreated in every possible way by her father, Nemu still shows great loyalty to him, and has openly expressed worry at the prospect of his death. Unlike her father, however, she seems to have compassion for others, saving Uryū Ishida's life as thanks for not killing Mayuri.

Nemu's body was designed to withstand fatal wounds, though she still suffers the pain brought on by her injuries. This extends to being able to survive impregnation by Szayel Aporro Granz, a process meant to bring him back to life while leaving his host as an empty husk. Mayuri can repair Nemu very quickly in these situations, allowing her to continue doing her father's bidding. Nemu is also immune to Mayuri's many poisons. Despite this, she carries around a variety of antidotes to be used as she sees fit. She also holds various poisons and potions derived from Mayuri's research in her own body, making her highly dangerous to those that attack her internally. Nemu does not normally carry a zanpakutō, but she is revealed to have one in an illustration in the artbook "All Color but the Black." Her zanpakutō takes the form of what appears to be a thin katana.

[edit] Rin Tsubokura
Voiced by: Miho Saiki
Rin Tsubokura (壷府 リン, Tsubokura Rin?) is a character originally created by Tite Kubo for the Bleach-Fan Japanese Bleach news site as a mascot. He regularly interacts with Ichigo's seiyū in brief video segments on the site. Later, he was brought into the manga and anime as one of Hiyosu's assistants. He has an obsession with candy and any other sort of sweets, jumping at the chance to visit the real world just to buy sweets unavailable in Soul Society. He is just as timid and simple minded as Hanatarō Yamada and Ururu Tsumugiya. According to Hiyosu, he usually runs and hides from any assignment and is surprised at his willingness to go to to the real world.

[edit] Former officers

Former Captain: Kirio Hikifune (曳舟 桐生, Hikifune Kirio?)
Hikifune left the 12th Division soon before the start of the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries under the guise of retirement. In actuality, she was transferred to the Royal Guard. Her lieutenant, Hiyori Sarugaki, thought of her as a mother-figure. She was succeeded by Kisuke Urahara.

Former Captain: Kisuke Urahara (浦原 喜助, Urahara Kisuke?)
Urahara, once the 3rd Seat of the 2nd Division, replaces Kirio Hikifune as the captain of the 12th Division during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. His hollowfication experiments and a ploy formed by Sōsuke Aizen cause him to be exiled to the human world a century before the start of the series.

Former Lieutenant: Hiyori Sarugaki (猿柿 ひよ里, Sarugaki Hiyori?)
Hiyori is the lieutenant of the 12th Division under Kisuke Urahara during the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. She was also the lieutenant of Urahara's predecessor, Kirio Hikifune. She leaves Soul Society after becoming a vizard.

And 13th Division:

Spoiler
13th Division

[edit] Jūshirō Ukitake
Rank: Captain
Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa (Japanese), Liam O'Brien (English)
Jūshirō Ukitake (浮竹 十四郎, Ukitake Jūshirō?) is a sickly looking man with long white hair. He suffers from tuberculosis, which caused his hair to turn white, and acts as an inhibition for him throughout the series; if he fights for too long, or even becomes too agitated, the illness flares up. He is forced to leave most of his duties as a captain to his subordinates so that he can rest. Despite this, Ukitake is respected by many Soul Reapers for his honesty, loyalty, and personal sense of justice. He and his friend Shunsui Kyōraku are two of the oldest captains in the Gotei 13, both having trained under General Yamamoto thousands of years before the current Bleach storyline.

Ukitake's zanpakutō is Sōgyo no Kotowari (双魚の理, Sōgyo no Kotowari? literally "truth of Pisces"; translated in the English manga as "law of the twin fish"). His zanpakutō is, along with that of Kyoraku Shunsui's, one of only two zanpakutō in Soul Society to exist as a pair. Where it differs from Kyoraku's is that it only becomes a pair after its shikai release, while Kyoraku's is a daisho sword pair even in its sealed form. It is released with the command "Waves rise now and become my shield. Lightning strike now and become my blade" (波悉く我が盾となれ雷悉く我が刃となれ, nami kotogotoku waga tate to nare, ikazuchi kotogotoku waga yaiba to nare?, more literally "Every wave be my shield, every thunder become my blade").[19] In Sōgyo no Kotowari's released state, it splits into two thin blades resembling fishing javelins with reverse jitte prongs on the dull side of the blade, that are connected by a cord lined with several small charms. While the anime and manga have yet to depict what special abilities it possesses, some Bleach video games portray it as having the ability to manipulate water and electricity.

[edit] Kaien Shiba
Rank: Former Lieutenant; not replaced
Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (Japanese), Kim Strauss (English)
Kaien Shiba (志波 海燕, Shiba Kaien?) was the lieutenant of the 13th Division under Jūshirō Ukitake and was considered something of a prodigy. He was reluctant to take the position, feeling that there were others more deserving of the job. He closely resembled Ichigo Kurosaki in both appearance and personality, particularly his desire to protect those close to him regardless of the law or the personal consequences, something that is brought up multiple times in the series. Though he had a good relationship with all of his subordinates, he was particularly close with Rukia Kuchiki; he taught her how to fight and helped her find a place within the 13th Division. Unlike other Soul Reapers, Kaien treated Rukia like any other, not judging her by the name Kuchiki, which in turn helped her to gain some self-confidence. After his wife, Miyako, was killed by a hollow, Kaien went out to kill the hollow to seek revenge. He was possessed by the hollow in the process and attacked Rukia who held up her sword in self-defense. He briefly regained control of his body and thrusted himself on her sword. Though he thanked her for doing so and apologized for his actions, Rukia forever feels guilty about her role in his death.

The hollow that possessed Kaien was designed to return to Hueco Mundo when killed. Still merged with the hollow at the time, the two were sent back as one entity. The hollow was eventually consumed by Aaroniero Arruruerie, who was able to use Kaien's appearance and abilities, namely his zanpakutō, Nejibana (捩花, Nejibana? Japanese name for the Spiranthes, translated in the English manga as "twisted flower"). When released with the command "rankle the seas and the skies" (水天逆巻け, suiten sakamake?), Nejibana transforms into a crystalline cross between a trident and a ji. In this form it has the ability to manipulate water and can create shockwaves to split the enemy in two. Rukia is able to defeat Aaroniero despite his taking the appearance of Kaien, freeing her mentor at long last.

[edit] Kiyone and Sentarō

Rank: 3rd Seat
Kiyone Voiced by: Chinami Nishimura (Japanese), Jeannie Elias (English)
Sentarō Voiced by: Kōichi Tōchika (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (English)
Kiyone Kotetsu (虎徹 清音, Kotetsu Kiyone?) and Sentarō Kotsubaki (小椿 仙太郎, Kotsubaki Sentarō?) share the duties of the lieutenant, though neither appear suited for the actual position. They squabble quite often, each believing that they are more respectful of their captain than the other is. They both mean well, but are highly competitive and constantly critical of the other (to further their rivalry, they also happen to share the same birthday, September 22). Kiyone is the younger sister of Isane Kotetsu.

Vizard:
Spoiler
The vizard are the antithesis to the arrancar: they are Soul Reapers who have obtained hollow powers. The associated process is referred to as "Hollowification" (虚化, horō-ka?).[2][3] Having begun as Soul Reapers, the vizard appear entirely human, and barring those times when they are using their powers are indistinguishable from ordinary Soul Reapers. To gain access to their hollow powers, a vizard dons a hollow mask. This allows them to augment their Soul Reaper abilities with hollow powers, as well as giving them access to some of the generic hollow abilities. Their spiritual pressure likewise changes into a mix of hollow and Soul Reaper.

It is unclear what the motives of the vizard are. The members of the vizard group have been shown to be former high-level Soul Reapers, exclusively drawn from the captain and lieutenant ranks. Soul Society's Central 46 considers them to be de facto hollows, and ordered that they be exterminated. The vizard aren't aligned with hollows. Thus, it can be presumed that the only side the vizard are on is their own. Regardless, they seem to be valuable allies-to-be in the battle against Sōsuke Aizen's army of arrancar, as Kisuke Urahara mentions.[4] The vizard have not shown any sort of hierarchy, seeming to prefer a loose-knit organization.

The existence of Soul Reaper/hollow hybrids is first hinted at early in the series. In order to regain his Soul Reaper powers after being stripped of them, Ichigo Kurosaki has his Chain of Fate severed by Kisuke Urahara in order to force him to regain his lost power before becoming a hollow. Ichigo is only able to succeed once he begins transforming into a hollow. Ichigo's transformation happens out of sequence, his mask forming first instead of his body breaking apart and reforming, a sign of his resistance, and he emerges as a Soul Reaper wearing a hollow's mask, which he tears off. After he arrives in Soul Society, the hollow mask reappears on his person on several occasions blocking several would-be fatal blows, despite Ichigo throwing it away on several occasions. In his fight against Byakuya Kuchiki, Ichigo's inner hollow takes control of his body, causing his mask to reform around his face. Ichigo is able to regain control and tear off the mask before the transformation completes.

Ichigo later discovers that there are other Soul Reapers who have acquired hollow powers besides himself. Shinji Hirako, a boy carrying a zanpakutō and a hollow mask, reveals that these renegade Soul Reapers call themselves the vizard. Shinji tries to convince Ichigo to join their group, saying that only he can teach Ichigo how to control his "hollow within" and keep it from taking over and destroying everything Ichigo cares about. Ichigo initially refuses Shinji's offer, but relents after realizing he can't control his inner hollow on his own. Ichigo insists that he's merely using them to learn how to control his inner hollow.

To accomplish this task, Shinji knocks Ichigo unconscious so he can face his inner hollow on common ground. As this happens, Ichigo's body transforms into a rabid hollow, which the vizard take turns battling in order to keep it in check. Ichigo manages to overcome and subdue his inner hollow, and begins training with the vizard to better control his new powers. Ichigo abandons his training when the town is threatened, despite having very little control over his powers compared to the more experienced vizard.

In the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries, the vizard are shown to have been unwillingly subjected to hollowification by Aizen, who used some sort of infectious agent to trigger the change. Kisuke Urahara and Tessai rescue them and attempts to use the Hōgyoku to reverse the damage, but it fails. Urahara is captured and taken before Central 46 who blamed him for all that had happened. Central 46 sentences Urahara to be banished to the human world and the vizards to be executed as hollows. Yoruichi arrives and rescues Urahara and Tessai, taking them and the vizards to a secret place. Urahara gives them untraceable gigais for their escape to the human world.[5] Like Ichigo, all of their masks appear to have formed first before their bodies transformed.

In battle, the vizard use their hollow powers to augment their Soul Reaper abilities, granting them massive increases in speed, stamina, and strength. They also gain access to some of the common hollow abilities, such as cero blasts. Bodily harm can seemingly be ignored while wearing their masks, as demonstrated by Ichigo's hollow during his unwilling transformations. The hollow mask can only be maintained for a certain period before its effects wear off: Ichigo can only hold his transformation for a short period (eleven seconds at first), while the other vizard can potentially go several hours without tiring.

Vizard zanpakutō function in the same manner as those of standard Soul Reapers; however, none of them have explicitly used their releases in combat yet, excluding Ichigo and Kensei. The vizard seem to prefer their mask-given powers to their Soul Reaper abilities. The vizard remain in complete control while wearing their masks, unlike Ichigo's early unstable transformations. As suggested by Aizen, the fusion of the two spiritual entities allows these Soul Reapers to reach levels of power far surpassing that of either side.

Vizard Countinued:
Spoiler
There are eight known vizard aside from Ichigo Kurosaki. Five of these are men and the other three are women. Three vizard speak kansai-ben, a dialect spoken in Osaka and Kyoto. All vizard are former Soul Reaper captains or lieutenants from approximately 100 years before the main storyline.

[edit] Love Aikawa
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada
Love Aikawa (愛川 羅武(ラブ)[6][7], Aikawa Rabu?) is the former captain of the 7th Division. He is a tall man sporting sunglasses, a spiked afro (shaped like a normal round afro during his days as a Soul Reaper), and a jogging suit. He seems to be very laid back, usually reading Shōnen Jump or some of Lisa's erotic manga in his spare time. He and Rose seem to be close friends. His zanpakutō's hilt is in the shape of a heart, and he carries its sheath on a tōju hanging from his shoulder like a messenger bag.

[edit] Shinji Hirako
Voiced by: Masaya Onosaka
Shinji Hirako (平子 真子, Hirako Shinji?) is the former captain of the 5th Division, preceding his lieutenant Sōsuke Aizen. He distrusted Aizen from the day they met, and thus made him lieutenant so he could keep an eye on him. Because Shinji never socialized with Aizen, however, he was easily deceived by Aizen's actions, culminating to his conversion into a hollow. Shinji's character is somewhat comical, adding a bit of levity to situations that are otherwise serious. He seems to like annoying his associate, Hiyori Sarugaki, which usually earns him a slap from one of her sandals. He also appears to have a history of referring to cute girls he meets as his 'first love', complete with a deadpan look on his face despite the obvious lie (he apparently never did this with Hiyori, further annoying her).[8] An early design of Shinji can be seen in the first chapter's cover art, making it clear he was planned well before his introduction.[9] During several points in the anime, Shinji's outfit is depicted to look like Lupin the III, likely as a homage on the part of the animators.

Shinji's hollow mask resembles a pharaoh's mask. Shinji is quite skilled with his hollow powers, using a single cero blast to easily overwhelm Grimmjow Jeagerjaques. The video games also depict him being able to split the cero blasts into a pyramid shaped attack. Not much has been revealed about Shinji's zanpakutō, as he rarely uses or even visibly wears it. The hilt and sheath are red. None of his release states have been shown, and the times that he does seriously fight he seems to prefer to use his hollow powers.

[edit] Mashiro Kuna
Voiced by: Akemi Kanda
Mashiro Kuna (久南 白, Kuna Mashiro?) is the former lieutenant of the 9th Division under Kensei. She is a somewhat ditzy girl who is prone to throwing fits for the smallest of things, such as Orihime befriending Hachi or when Kensei insisted on following his subordinates into battle when they were still in the Gotei 13. She wears a white bodysuit and goggles in her green hair. Her overall style of dress is reminiscent of the costumes worn by the tokusatsu superheroes of late 1970s Japanese television, perhaps meant as a contrast between her age and childish appearance. Her Soul Reaper uniform had sleeves that stretched past her arms, a pink scarf, and glasses in place of goggles. She often calls Ichigo Berry-tan, a play on Ichigo's name.

Fitting with her tokusatsu theme, Mashiro's hollow form bears a distinct resemblance to Kamen Rider's armor. She has elongated, armored legs, and her hollow mask resembles a heart-shaped bee's head with two antennae sticking out from the indent at the top. She was able to maintain her hollow mask for fifteen hours on her first attempt to control her hollow, which means she did not need to train like the other vizard.

[edit] Kensei Muguruma
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita
Kensei Muguruma (六車 拳西, Muguruma Kensei?) is the former captain of the 9th Division.[10] Kensei appears to be a young man with short, light-gray hair and several piercings. He also has a tattoo of the number 69 on his stomach, which was the inspiration for the one Shūhei Hisagi has on his cheek after saving him when he was younger.[11] He wears a basketball jersey and cargo pants with combat boots. In comparison with his fellow vizard, Kensei is a much more serious character. He has a short temper and is easily irritated, particularly by Mashiro.

Kensei's zanpakutō is named Tachikaze (断地風, Tachikaze? lit. earth-severing wind) and is released with the command "blow it away" (吹っ飛ばせ, futtobase?). When sealed, its hilt is in a sort of 'H' shape. His shikai shrinks it down into the form of a survival/combat knife. While in this form, Kensei demonstrates the ability to charge and fire spiritual energy from the blade. His hollow form looks humanoid with cylindrical structures sprouting from his back and shoulders, one on each shoulder and the other six on his back. Bone-like armor grows over his forearms, and two extra plates cover his fists. His mask looks similar to a hockey mask, but is squared off with six eyes and extends around the back of his head.[12]

[edit] Rōjūrō Otoribashi
Voiced by: Shouto Kashii
Rōjūrō Otoribashi (鳳橋 楼十郎, Ōtoribashi Rōjūrō?), commonly referred to as Rose (ローズ, Rōzu?), is the former captain of the 3rd Division. He became captain approximately one year before Kisuke Urahara.[13] He is an effeminate man with long, wavy, blond hair and a frilly shirt. He seems to be interested in music, as he speaks to Love about an artist's new single and has been seen playing or tuning a guitar on several occasions. Rose appears to be one of the calmer and perhaps wiser ones amongst the group, though he becomes irritated whenever Love spoils a manga's story for him. His zanpakutō's hilt is in the shape of a diamond with curved edges, and its sheath is encrusted with diamonds.

[edit] Hiyori Sarugaki
Voiced by: Reiko Takagi
Hiyori Sarugaki (猿柿 ひよ里, Sarugaki Hiyori?) is a former lieutenant of the 12th Division under captains Kirio Hikifune and Kisuke Urahara. She viewed Hikifune as a mother figure, and thus initially refused to accept Urahara as her replacement. Hiyori is a tiny, blonde-haired girl with a fierce temper and violent tendencies. Her hair is worn in pigtails and she wears a red jogging outfit decorated with the first kanji of her name (猿 saru, meaning "monkey"). She also has a tiny fang on the left side of her mouth. Hiyori often abuses Shinji Hirako, usually by slapping him with one of her sandals or using him as a human shield when necessary. This behavior dates back to her time as a lieutenant, despite the fact that Shinji outranked her then.

Hiyori took the longest to defeat her inner hollow out of all the current vizard (excluding Ichigo, who took about the same amount of time), at 69 minutes and 2 seconds. Hiyori's zanpakutō is standard in appearance with her tsuba decorated in small hearts, a contrast to her not-so-girlish personality. She normally wears her sword from her right shoulder, like Ichigo. Her hollow mask looks like that of a generic hollow, but sports a prominent slender horn on the forehead.

[edit] Hachigen Ushōda
Voiced by: Takashi Nagasako
Hachigen Ushōda (有昭田 鉢玄, Ushōda Hachigen?), commonly referred to as Hachi (ハッチ), is the physically largest vizard. He was formerly the lieutenant of the Kidō Corps under Tessai Tsukabishi. He wears a green tuxedo and has a black crossbone design in his pink hair. When he was a Soul Reaper, his hair was styled into a pair of horns and emblazoned with the symbol of the Kidō Corps. He specializes in binding spells, and as such is always tasked with making barriers for the vizards' use. He is skilled enough to use bakudō up to #99 without the incantation. By his own admission, his powers are very similar to those of Orihime Inoue's. Despite his unusual size, Hachi is actually very kind and gentle, and seems to enjoy Orihime's company. His zanpakutō is fairly ordinary and has an 'H'-shaped hilt with rounded edges.

[edit] Lisa Yadōmaru
Voiced by: Kanako Hatori
Lisa Yadōmaru (矢胴丸 リサ, Yadōmaru Risa?) was the former lieutenant of the 8th Division under Captain Shunsui Kyōraku. She is a girl with glasses and long, braided, dark hair, who dresses in a sailor ***u, as opposed to the more Western-style uniforms worn by the female students of Karakura High School. In keeping with her current appearance, her Soul Reaper uniform had a shortened hakama resembling a skirt. She seems easily irritated and apparently likes to read erotic manga (specifically, Josei manga). She is also very curious, and would spy on the captain's meetings during her time in Soul Society. When she was a lieutenant for Gotei 13, she read to Nanao Ise, later her successor as lieutenant, every month. Her zanpakutō is considerably longer than most, making it appear like a nōdachi. She appears to be ambidextrous, initially wielding her zanpakutō with her left hand and then switching to her right during her fight with Ichigo.

Hollow:
Spoiler
Arrancar are hollows that have had their masks removed and have gained the powers of a Soul Reaper. Most of them are far more powerful and more intelligent than simple hollows. They become major antagonists during the second half of the series as they start being led by Sōsuke Aizen. Most arrancar have been designated some type of number by Aizen.

Espada

The Espada.
Top row: Nnoitra, Barragan, Grimmjow, Aaroniero, Halibel.
Bottom row: Yammy, Stark, Ulquiorra, Szayel Aporro, Zommari. The Espada are the ten strongest arrancar in Sōsuke Aizen's army. They are ranked in order of their strength. The members are listed according to their known rank. The first three hold the top three ranks although their specific ranks haven't been revealed.

Stark
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama
Stark (スターク, Sutāku?) appears to be very lazy; he is seen sleeping when the Espada learn of Aaroniero Arruruerie's death, and does not appear overly concerned by the news. Lilinette (リリネット, Ririnetto?), his young female Fracción, typically shows the concern that Stark does not.[3] When he is shown to be serious, however, his personality changes completely; he comes off as reluctant but nonetheless willing to do what needs to be done to complete the task at hand. The remains of Stark's hollow mask consist of a bottom jaw that is positioned like a necklace. His hollow hole is on his sternum, right below the tip of his mask. While his combat abilities have not been shown, he is at the least very fast, as he manages to kidnap Orihime Inoue while Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki are only a few feet away.[4]

Halibel
Voiced by: Megumi Ogata
Halibel (ハリベル, Hariberu?) is the only current female Espada. She is very calm and rarely speaks, and when she does it's fairly serious, such as when she tells her three female Fracción Apache (アパッチ, Apacchi?), Mila Rose (ミラ・ローズ, Mira Rōzu?), and Sun-Sun (スンスン, Sunsun?) that being afraid of an Espada's released form is a natural reaction. The remnants of Halibel's hollow mask are partially covered by her collar, but it is clear that she at least has pieces of mask on both sides of her cheeks. She carries her zanpakutō on her back; the sword itself is notably broad and short compared to those of other Espada.

Barragan
Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka
Barragan (バラガン, Baragan?) is a stout, older, and grumpy arrancar. The remnant of his mask takes the form of a five-pointed crown. He bears large visible scars on the left side of his chin and across his right eye, and wears a large rope-like sash with a sun-crested buckler attached to it in addition to the regular obi sash. He appears to hold a position of power above the other Espada, or at the very least thinks somewhat highly of himself, as he begins giving orders from a skull-adorned throne carried by his four Fracción once Aizen is trapped and tells Halibel "not to underestimate him."

Neliel Tu Oderschvank

Nel in her child and adult forms.
Voiced by: Tomoko Kaneda
Neliel Tu Oderschvank (ネリエル・トゥ・オーデルシュヴァンク, Nerieru Tu Ōderushuvanku?), commonly known as Nel Tu (ネル・トゥ, Neru Tu?),[5] is a good-natured, child-like arrancar when first introduced. The remains of her hollow mask make up a cartoonish skull on the top of her head. Nel and her companions believe Soul Reapers, not hollows, to be evil, and as such are afraid of them. In spite of this, she develops an attachment to Ichigo Kurosaki and starts following him around after her introduction. Nel's true form is that of a fully-grown woman, her mask appearing less cartoonish with a pair of curved horns. A large "3" tattooed on her back indicates that she was previously the third Espada.[6] Nnoitra Jiruga snuck up on and attacked Nel in the past, causing her to turn into her child-form, giving her amnesia, and allowing him to expel her from the Espada. When Nel runs into Nnoitra years later and he begins to torture Ichigo, she turns into her adult form with her memories restored. She retains her affection for Ichigo, as she hugs him without realizing that her strength is causing him personal injury. As she is about to defeat Nnoitra, Nel reverts back to her child form, with no apparent memory of what had just occurred.

In her child-state, Nel's vomit (which she believes to be saliva) acts as a powerful healing agent. In both her child and adult form, she can swallow cero attacks and fire them back. In her adult form, she can also add her own cero to this blast, doubling its power. Nel's zanpakutō, which manifests when she transforms, is named Gamuza (羚騎士(ガミューサ), Gamyūsa?, Spanish for "chamois," Japanese for "antelope knight"). Its release command is "declare" (謳え, utae?).[7] Her released form is that of a ibex-like centaur with longer curved horns, a thick tail, and armor over her shoulders and hands. Her sword transforms into a double-ended lance, giving her the appearance of a medieval knight or a jouster. One of her attacks is called Lanzador Verde (Spanish for "green lancer"), in which she throws her lance directly at her opponent. The lance moves at high speed and rotates extremely fast, drilling through anything it hits.

[edit] Ulquiorra Schiffer
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa
Ulquiorra Schiffer (ウルキオラ・シファー, Urukiora Shifā?) is the fourth Espada, signified by the "4" tattooed to his chest. His name stems from that of a furniture designer named Patricia Urquiola.[8] He has a largely stoic appearance, rarely even changing his facial expression, and does not allow the actions of others to impede the tasks set to him by Sōsuke Aizen. He will attack his comrades to get them to pay attention to him, and deems anyone he does not find of particular interest to be "trash" and therefore expendable.[9] The remainder of Ulquiorra's hollow mask lies on top of his head, forming a broken helmet. His hollow hole has moved since his first appearance; when first introduced it is at the base of his neck,[10] but in later appearances it has been moved onto his chest.[11]

Though Ulquiorra has yet to fight with his full power, he has displayed a number of unique tendencies. He usually keeps his hands in his pockets when in a combat situation, only bringing them out to deflect attacks. His cero blasts, which he fires from his fingertips, are animated as green instead of the standard red and black. Grimmjow Jeagerjaques notes that he tends to stab opponents in the chest, the same location as his hollow hole, whenever he is particularly interested in a battle, though it is unclear if Ulquiorra is conscious of this habit.[12] He is very analytical; he almost accurately theorizes the means behind Orihime Inoue's abilities, and recognizes that Ichigo Kurosaki's power constantly fluctuates between weaker and stronger than his own.[13] He also seems to refrain from killing a person unless necessary, twice sparing Ichigo and proclaiming he would not harm Orihime because he had not been ordered to. He can replay events he has seen to others by removing and crushing his left eye, which then turns into dust and flows around those Ulquiorra is relaying information to.[14] The name and released state of Ulquiorra's zanpakutō have not been revealed.

[edit] Nnoitra Jiruga
Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna
Nnoitra Jiruga (ノイトラ・ジルガ, Noitora Jiruga?) is the fifth Espada, signified by the "5" tattooed to his tongue. He wears a large eye-patch that covers most of the left side of his face, as well as the remnants of his hollow mask (a small set of jawbones and teeth) and his hollow hole. He is very rude and lecherous, and firmly believes in male chauvinism. Nnoitra hates the idea of a woman being stronger than or outranking a man, and longs to give any woman in such a position their "deserved" inferior rank. This mindset led to his attack on Nel Tu, who frequently defeated him in battle though never killed him. He gave her amnesia and kicked her from the Espada, hoping to be stronger by the time they met again. Nnoitra longs to be able to prove his strength as the strongest Espada, and takes advantage of any weakness to achieve this end; however, he generally does not bother attacking opponents who appear unconscious or incapacitated.[15] He does this so that he can experience the artificial high of near death experiences more often; saying the only time he feels alive is when he's gurgling on his own blood. [16]

Having the self-proclaimed toughest hierro of any Espada, past or present, Nnoitra can deflect powerful attacks without any sign of injury.[17] He also has the ability to track and measure sources of spiritual power by touching his fingertip to the ground.[18][19] His zanpakutō, Santa Teresa (聖哭螳螂(サンタテレサ), Santa Teresa? Spanish alternative name for Mantis religiosa, Japanese for "sacred crying mantis"), takes the form of a giant ax-like weapon bearing two crescent moon blades fused together at their backs. Its release command is "pray" (祈れ, inore?). When released, Nnoitra gains two additional sets of arms, and each of his hands gains an identical scythe-like weapon.[20] He grows a pair of horns on his head, one longer on one side than the other, mimicking the crescent shape of his sealed zanpakutō. Nnoitra's wounds heal almost instantly in his released state, and he can also regenerate severed limbs.[21]

Nnoitra is drawn to the site of the battle between Ichigo Kurosaki once the latter has defeated Grimmjow Jeagerjaques. After he tortures Ichigo for a while Nel Tu, who is in Ichigo's company, overcomes her amnesia and attacks Nnoitra to protect Ichigo. Though she almost defeats him yet again, her amnesia kicks back in and she is left at his mercy. Kenpachi Zaraki soon arrives to help them, and he and Nnoitra exchange increasingly more devastating blows, each finding great enjoyment in the fact that they can survive one another's attacks and therefore prolong the battle. Nnoitra, however, is eventually no longer able to endure Zaraki's attacks and dies what he believes to be a "warrior's death;" his life ends in a split second before his body hits the floor in recoil from Zaraki's blow.
