I've learned Japanese for 3 years in High school, but my sensei wasn't much help because no one would want to listen to her, so it was difficult for her to teach us. She would only teach me and a couple of the good students xD. I just a semester of Japanese in college because I'm planning to minor in the language. Here are some of the basic greetings you should know :Ohayoo (gozaimasu) : you can add the "gozaimasu" when you speak to someone older or for formal use. This means GOOD MORNING. Konnichi wa:" HELLO' in the afternoon to sundown Konban wa: "GOOD EVENING' Oyasumi nasai: 'GOOD NIGHT' Dewa mata / Jaa mata: 'SEE YOU!' Sayoonara / Shitsuree Shimasu: 'GOODBYE' Tadaima: 'I'M HOME!' Okaerinasai: 'WELCOME HOME!' Doomo Arigatou: 'Thank you very much' Doo itashi mashite: 'you're welcome' Doomo: 'I am very sorry' Sumimasen: 'thanks a lot' Gom men nasai: 'forgive me' Itadakimasu: Before having a meal you say, 'I will receive this food / drink' Gochi sama deshita: 'it was a feast' Ogenki desu ka?: 'How are you?' Hai, genki desu / Hai, okagesamade: 'I'm fine, thank you' Irasshaimase: (used when you are at a Japanese store & employees greet you) 'welcome (customer)' Gomen Kudasai: 'Hello (visiting someone's home)' Omedetoo gozaimasu: 'congratulations' Ogenai shimasu: 'Please do it for me' or 'I make a request' These are the base words and phrases I've learned in the first day of class ^^ Also when you meet someone for the first time you say... Hajimeshite doozo yooroshiku. For example: Hajimeshite, watashi no namae wa Lyn desu. doozo yooroshiku. 'hello please to meet you. my name is lyn. it's a pleasure.' hope this helps
