ill add to what balling said, maybe it doesnt "materialize" a shinigami or hollow side. i could be that like turning into an arrancar only certain shinigami can do it. remember the vizard needed the hougyoku in order to not to become full hollow. so maybe ichigo already had what it took to become a vizard while the others had to be helped in order to make the change.

Well what I don't understand is that when Ichigo first transformed into a shinigami, he had a vizard mask. Maybe I missed the part where they explained that or just forgot -.-

And the vizard didn't need it to keep from dying, they needed it to keep from turning into hollows completely. And by your logic... oh wait I guess I meant ballins logic... if the vizard lost their inner battles they would become hollows, so if the hollows didn't remove their mask right they would become shinigami. That is something that just didn't happen. If hollows didn't remove their mask correctly they just became incomplete arrancars. There is obviously a difference in the way they go about the transformations.

but i like the point about the transforming into a shinigami. a vizard gains a hollow persona, but doesnt lose any shinigami-ness. an arrancar is removing some of its hollow-ness, not gaining an inner shinigami. hollows just seem to be more dominant.
