I never had problem with cool/favorite/good/bad characters dying in anime. So even though I like him, it would be good for the story if he died. This anime has everything anyone can ask and the only thing it needs is some dark theme, so a death of an important character should be nice.

OP doesn't need dark themes, just.... higher stakes, yes? Ace's death would certainly contribute to that.
