i have never seen the anime you mention. however, Nana is very dramatic. well.... very realistic to be percise.

I heard Clannad is good.
Kanon 2006 looks promising. ( i only saw kanon 2002)
True tears is another one.
well, above all. I would see Nana 1st. japan best seller shouldnt disappoint you

you know; another thing about romance film is the music. the music sets the mood. if the music is good, it really enhance the whole performent and expression of the story. Nana has good music to suit the serie aside from the good plots. at least i think it does.

When I read your title, the first anime that came to mind was White Album. A romance between a rising idol (the girl) and the protagonist. It's drama and there are many female characters who have the hots for the male protagonist.

First of all, I totally recommend you watch the following two movies:

1. 5 Centimeters Per Second - 5 Centimeters per Second - MyAnimeList.net

2. The Place Promised in Our Early Days - The Place Promised in Our Early Days - MyAnimeList.net

Both are Makoto Shinkai's works, beautiful art, heartbreaking stories, incredible music.

Nana has already been recommended so I'd like to give a +1 for the recommendation cause it's an awesome anime. (and the manga is even better

)

Paradise Kiss is also a very good anime (the author is the same as Nana) - Paradise Kiss - MyAnimeList.net

Air is also a very good anime, very sad... - Air - MyAnimeList.net

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is also a romance decent anime - Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora - MyAnimeList.net

I have a feeling you might also enjoy Ouran High School Host Club although it's more of a comedy, yet it's very good - Ouran High School Host Club - MyAnimeList.net

(I guess you've at least heard about Skip Beat and Vampire Knight so I won't even mention them)

That's all from me. I should state that some of those anime have supernatural or mecha elements, still are romance stories, some of them really heartbreaking.
