I'm up for pretty much any genre. Just no sports or slice of life anime please.

Please don't suggest One Piece/Yu Yu/Dragon Ball (series) or anything like that. They had their OK moments but generally the series kinda sucked in my opinion.

The animation doesn't have to be awesome. I can watch old school anime but to make up for the lacking art it has to have an awesome and detailed plot (like Berserk).

Ah since you liked Higurashi I will recommend Umineko no Naku Koro ni ^^

*the first episode seems rushed but I see the potential for greatness, just like Higurashi

Honestly I'm not sure what to make of that series. It looks like it has potential but it also looks like it could be really really cheesy ad a semi rip off of the general non linear style of Higurashi which wouldn't be cool unless it tied in with the plot like it did in Higurashi.

As with Higurashi it's based off of a murder mystery game, which is currently ongoing apparently, after some research. I have heard that Umineko and Higurashi are supposed to be related somewhat, (as in parallel worlds or something) but I didn't look too deep for the sake of saving myself from spoilers!
I don't know exactly how it's laid out, since I don't know much about the game, but from the plot summary I am guessing that it will not be like Higurashi.

Any suggestions at all that aren't based on hip hop Samurai or anything remotely close to the dragon ball series?

watch kuroshitsuji.
when i first saw this anime i didnt exspect much.
but i was really surprised by it.
i really recommend it! just watch the first 3 eps.
action, drama, humor.
