Didn't they both die? Just that simple? I don't like to complicate things but if I have to, I'll analyze all your theories. XDD

Yes, it is. But that's not enough for most people, and if that was all it would be a very poor ending. Things don't just happen to happen in an anime like that, everything has a cause and a purpose.

Why would reiji want to die? He wanted to see Mio again and came to terms with his killing way earlier on. He could finally stop searching for ellens past because she had enough and her new life was more important than finding her old memories. So then why after she was happy enough to stop searching would she want to die. The only thing i can think of that makes any amount of sense is that the cart driver shot reiji and he fell down (passed out i assume) but didnt die. Also im fairly sure there is no flower petal with enough poison to kill a person and if it did it would probly still take a while. Him surviving a random gunshot is quite pointless but nothing else makes any sense at all. Overall the ending heavily detracted from my enjoyment of the show and was quite terrible. Animes seem to have a big problem with terrible endings.

It would have been a great ending if they just rolled credits when the sky was still blue. Who the hell kills the main protagonist 6 months after the climax? thats just stupid. I would have been fine with everyone dieing during the final battle. That could have made a wonderful ending but six months later after the bad guys are defeated is quite lame. In fact i think that the best possible ending would be for ellen to have fought Cal and died and then had an awesome final battle between reiji and Cal where they both draw and shoot each other Then reiji says hes sorry for doing this to Cal and Cal forgives him and when shes done talking about how they can live together she realises that reiji is dead and she cries. Or if you want it extra sad you could then have Cal kill herself. The ending they gave us almost seems like a cop out to avoid sequels or something.

I agree with you on it not being an appropriate ending... i wanted a happy ending for them though - they seemed like they deserved at least that.

Unfortunately at the ending the girl says "These memories are enough to keep me happy" as she puts her hand around on of the poisonous flowers. A shell is seen lying in the grass which makes it likely that she is the one who killed Reiji and then killed herself. The cart could be purely symbolic of death

Your all forgetting one important factor. In your whole murder suicide theory.. Where is the gun? Why would you shoot someone then hide the gun? It should be next to her on the grass.

When is there ever a gun on them? Her death wasn't like a gunshot, she poisoned herself. Meaning it wasn't some instant thing, she had more than enough time to put the gun back where it came from (wherever they hide them) before killing herself.

I really think that's just part of the mystery of it. They want you to have to think about the ending for a moment. To be surprised, and wonder what just happened. So they show a cart driver, and they don't show a gun at all (only the shell in the grass). Had they shown a gun beside her it would be instantly obvious what happened and any mystery in it would vanish. Making it nothing but a fairly sad ending. =\

... I just have to make a comment about this ending...
Well...
Is it just me who thinks that this a Romeo and Juliet-like ending?

Reiji is shot,
Elen has poisoned herself
... there were also enough hints for an ending like this: Why is the Scythe Master so obsessed with opera and making the assassinations ''artistic''?!?
But wait... wouldn't it suck to just rip off an opera-ending?

Yep Romeo or rather Reiji wakes up, sees Elen dead, goes crazy and seeks revenge.
He'll try to destroy Inferno.
A SIlent shot, so what? If it doesn't hit him in the head?
Reiji has survived far worse than this...
Elen also survived back then, but she didn't get hit by a bullet, she was poisoned, which is a sure death.

So Reiji seeks revenge.
And what's with Cal?
She didn't seem very ... dead...
I think she'll also take part in the next season (if there is one)
And also Cal isn't te only person you thought has died, but where you couldn't actually see proof for the person actually being dead.
Maybe Tony's son is also taking part, who knows?

That are my speculations...

Who know, who knows? Who knows if there actually will be a next season, who knows if there actually is any deeper meaning in this?
Maybe making people die like this, only is the artist's way?
It's not like the first time you can't be sure wether the person died or not.
Is Lizzie dead or not?

I'd love to see a next season, but it'd really suck if Cal just died like this, so I want her to be in the next season.
And well if tehre is no season 2... Why do movies/series lately have to always have endings like this?!?!?

Whatever this are my speculations, deal with it :P

Do you think there will be a next season? Do you want a next season?

Oh yeah btw... ''Total Newbie''
... well I'm actually wasting half my time watching animes or reading mangas... so I assume this is directed to this forum...

Well it is true that after the point where they first brought Reiji and Elen seemingly back from the dead after the big battle it opened the door to make anything possible. But as I see it if they made a new season and did bring them both or just one of them back it kind of ruins it. It more or less makes every potentially life threatening moment a joke, because you can simply remind yourself *oh he's died twice before who's to say he's actually going to be in any trouble this time. They'll just bring him back on a whim again*.

So I really have no reason to doubt the speculation, but I'd personally rather not see it go down that path myself.

Also I seem to remember someone saying that there wouldn't be a next season pretty definitively, though you never really know with anime.
