I grew up in Korea. Lots of korean shows that I would consider "anime" but apparently anime only applies to japanese-animated-cartoon, but then wouldn't that be "japamation"? idk... I still think the shows I grew up with are just as much "anime" as the shows in japan. |

I would say the difference between what most see as anime and what most see as just cartoons would be that anime generaly follow a main story plot tell its end. Also anime tend to have deeper character development and even if they are comedy based will have a more mature feel to them. Also anime in many instances are based on a manga. Also to me the actual animation / graphic choices have to fit within a certain style type. To me these things are what decides it being an anime weather produced in America Korea Japan or some other nation doesn't matter. |

so let's say Anime has to be based of a Manga or some type of comic book I would say some of the American shows are anime like Spiderman (it follows a story and time line) Superman, Batman, ...etc (all follow some type of story line) X-men (the older one is totally serious anime even shown in Japan and here is the American one ) Flash Gordon - old anime even my father used to watch it and the list goes on the thing about many new American animation are being dumbed down and are so Disney like which I'm not happy about when I was a kid we called all of them cartoons including the Japanese, dutch, french..whatever it was but then Anime sounds a bit better |

Unless it's like Batman TAS, Spiderman, X-Men, usually anime follows a storyline. Now that isn't to say anime are better for having one, because I freaking loved watching Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry, the Flintstones, and so on. Another difference is the art of course, such as lack in details of the nose, more focus on hair etc.
