I thought she turned into the card The Hope? Maybe it's cus I was watching the damn dub... i saw the whole series in subs but the two movies I saw in dub.

Tomoya from Clannad. He just had a shitty life; his dad was a nobody, his wife died, he never saw his kid, he worked constantly, etc. But in the end he turned out to be OK. *tear*

Ritsuka from Loveless is pretty emo for a twelve year old kid, particularly at the start of the series. Thing is, he has a valid reason (several, actually) and acts as a legitimately depressed person would so I don't know if that counts.

In terms of pointlessly sad and over-the-top angsty...it might have just been that I didn't like him, but I always thought Suzaku from Code Geass was pretty unappealing whenever he became disgruntled. And since half the time his good mood was a facade, it seemed like he just festered in his (mostly self-inflicted) unhappiness.
