Band: Mastodon

Album: "Crack The Skye"

Release: 2009

Album Cover:

Genre: Progressive metal

Tracks:
9

Description:

"Crack The Skye" goes deep into the core of the soul, dissecting the archaic darkness that is of life and which we do not dare speak while they then emulate this astrological data from a massless phenomenon onto our plane of existance through the form of sound, arousing our teetering ears as of an ethereal pied piper.
The fourth studio album from the band stands out as the most focused, emotional and charismatic album yet, and while it wasn't as aggressive as their other acclaimed albums such as "Leviathan", it shunns this miniscule similie with its convictively eery harmony that the mentally insane could easily corrospond to in a joyful dance, its dissonant chorus color that seeps its way through the cracks of every smashing juggernaut of a riff, the tribal engulf and depth of bass that would suit the funeral of a deceased Mayan ruler and the maniacal lunge and run on percussions that pounds its voice like a siren while the impact of the colliding symbols ventriloquizes that of combusting gases from boiling lava.
Although the concept of the album may be quite vague in many ways, it is in fact quite simple and head on. The band feels that this album was more special and I personally feel it was more spritually emotional rather than "physically" agressive and chaotic as their previous albums. Many aspects went into play for the influence of the album, one of them being the work of Tsarist Russia and the theory of wormholes. Track 2: "Divinations" and track 4: "The Czar" both spawned from the theme of astral travel and wormholes.
Another great deal of influence from the album came from the loss of a loved one, mainly from the bands drummer, Brann Dailor, who had experienced the loss of his sister, Skye Dailor, to suicide at the grimm age of 14, thus, in memory of Skye, adding an "e" to the end of the word sky to the album title. Dailor describes the nightmare as "the moment of being told you lost someone dear to you, [that moment] is enough to crack the sky."

Track 1: "Oblivion"

ARTIST: CANIBUS
ALBUM: MELATONIN MAGIK
YEAR: 2010 - WARLAB RECORDS

REVIEW:
You know it’s rarely you have rappers that reach their peak and re-peak again, and Canibus is one of those cats that you can put up there. Because when you thought oh he ain’t doing nothing because a lot of the media coverage of him wasn’t on a Tiger Woods level and being label “underground” is like a death touch nah. Since day one Canibus has been and always will be a beast but over the last two years since the release of “For Whom the Beat Tolls” Bis has been semi-quiet up until the release of his collaboration EP with Keith Murray late last year. And now with new management and new label, War Lab Entertainment backing the man whom once coined himself as “Rip the Jacker” still rips tracks on his latest album called “Melatonin Magik”.

From the jump, the “Intro” speaks on what is “Melatonin” and the “Magik” Bis is trying to bring with this one, and as you go onto the second song (also the title track) where Bis goes in over a hard body track for like 50-65 bars with almost no hook until the end of the song. But where it gets interesting is his subliminal disses toward QD3 (the person whom produced and created the BEEF dvd series) and KRS-One, for what reason this listener doesn’t know why but Bis did and that’s that. Some Canibus’ best lyrical and illest moments aren’t the Eminem diss track “Air Strike [Pop Killer]” but songs like “Fraternity of the Impoverished”, “Only Slaves D.R.E.A.M.” and “Dragon of Judah” and all the songs havesubliminal points and poetic impact lyrically in which you won’t see a lot of heads compete at the level that Bis is comprehensively coming with on allot of his tracks.

Then you get a ton of features such as Copywrite & Bronze Nazareth on “Gold & Bronze Magik” in which might be the most laid back Canibus track I’ve heard since his last LP, “For Whom the Beat Tolls” and even with that you still get a more motivated and very comfortable Canibus we’ve seen in years.

Overall if there is one song that is something that can sum up the album it’s “Dead by Design” because it’s Canibus not giving a flying expletive on what he’s doing these days. The vibe of this album might be overtly lyrical but it’s has a boom bap classic 90’s feel to it with the producers and the productions they created gets a lot of kudos for blessing Mr. Can-I-Bus for something to rip. Thisalbum is definitely a 4 out of 5 stars. If you can knock one thing on the album even the features are dope I’d prefer a more less bloated album with a ton of heads in which yes they keep up with Bis without being forced to but less features would have been better, in this listeners opinion.

Rating: 4 out of 5
