3g dongle problems

hey guys,
My uncle recently bought a 3g dongle from orange with unlimited usage and straight after my actual cabled internet went down
So I'm currently stuck on the dongle whilst they come to repair it, but I'm getting horrible speeds for download and upload etc (as expected really) at 1.83mbps download, 0.35mbps upload speed and 197ms ping (from speedtest.net)

As i said above I expect speed to be poor but when I am trying to buffer videos on this site, or anywhere else the video loads anywhere between 3 mins and 6 mins then just stops and doesnt buffer any more. It also does the same with downloads and just freezes. Ive checked the settings in the program which tbh are garbage and the dongle is still connected whilst downloading etc and it still lets me open webpages etc whilst its downloading and after its stopped without having to reconnect.

Is there anyway to improve speed and/or stop it from stopping videos/downloads?

well i recommend that you download the videos using "DownloadHelper" addon for Firefox 3.5.x usually downloading works better than streaming for bad connections

then you can play it using CCCP package or just plain MPC or MPC-HC

Yea that's what I was going to reccomend, you need to use a sort of resume manager. I use freedownloadmanager.org's fdm 3.0 light with flashgot and download videos onto my pc, and then watch. Can't do much with 3g as sometimes it cuts out and sometimes it doesn't.

I use the downloadhelper myself, and that one still freezes too. Its really irritating, Vuze however works fine, but trying to download episodes on that takes forever and the .mkv i just got for darker than black took 8 hours and the video doesnt even play till halfway its just subs, and that with vlc media player.

wow your net is super horrible probably can't do much about can you do some wardriving and see if there are any open WiFi around?

Also for your lappy can you put it next to window where cellphone signal at highest? because 1.83Mbps = 234KB/s so if you get good signal you can lower your ping

thats the thing, on laptop, which is on vista its slower than pc but it doesnt stop halfway, on pc its faster speeds but it freezes lol i cant win

Tried moving laptop to where pc is etc and doesnt work, damn you wista!

try this get this http://knoppix.com/ no need to install just boot up on it, make sure to get EN not DE unlike you speak German hehe

I'm not sure if that dongle supported but usually Linux runs almost everything but let's say if it runs but you still have hardware issues I suggest you get that dongle replaced

if everything goes well probably bad drivers on the windows system
