true the tiny ones are ok but for a general laptop or even a desktop i wouldnt recommend a SSD for any type of storage. As a boot drive im all for them(Even considering the new Kingston's Intel G2 $85 40Gb SSD drive coming out for my next desktop*Check the spoiler*). Just for any storage i still recommend a normal HDD. Especially for the price you can get a huge magnitude of more storage. Its just alot more convenient than carrying around an external everywhere you go and you save money. But its up to the OP on the final decision.

for Desktop yea that's something else, I've never bought a SSD for a desktop as still waiting for prices to go down and especially I'm happy with my WD RE3 1TB for now and no need to spend more just for more performance
but for laptop upon my experience with most people if you don't break your laptop HD your friend would do it for you #1 problem causing HD death on laptops not waiting for system to fully shutdown or hibernate before putting in the bag. Most good laptops have software to protect HDs from shocks (to a certain extent) while operating but during shutdown process the computer is vulnerable and HD can be damaged from shock Also seen stupid crap like having a name tag magnet next to laptop and kaboom that HD is gone 64GB is pretty good for a laptop and recommend that SSD for most laptop users and no there is no need to carry an external HD around and don't need to carry all your stuff with you all the time, also a 2.5" external is very light and only require an extra USB port (sometimes not) to operate

hehe guess it really all comes down to user stupidity
that ruins most. Thats really funny that someone would put a magnet near/on their laptop.I just couldn't live with 64Gb myself, im already pushing my 120Gb HHD on my laptop now lol. Guess im in the abnormal group since i use my laptop to torrent and convert videos. Especially since my desktop is still running at 1.6Ghz 1Gig of ram. And it travels with me everywhere so the more space the better. What do you think of the limited write capacity of these SSD's though? Although there supposed to last a couple years, i still don't like that probability.

I would say if you getting a laptop get something that's truly portable. Otherwise you'll end up using it like a desktop (always plugged in, always needing a surface to set it on). Single GPU to save power and money. small screen to save power and reduce weight. The battery size is up to you. I would think having a small and a large battery would be nice. The smaller one is much lighter and makes it more portable. Once you've experienced what its like to have a truly portable computer you'll realize how nice it is. Also try Tigerdirect, dell outlet, and craigslist for some good deals- I would not recommend buying a used laptop of craigslist though >.> no telling what you'll get. http://www.tigerdirect.com/ http://www.dell.com/outlet/ http://www.craigslist.org/ Last edited by andrew.wa; 11-06-2009 at 08:17 PM.. |

Yeah netbooks are pretty much too small; I agree. BUT they've changed, some of the newer ones actually have decent keyboards... still though... I'd rather have a small laptop then a netbook anyday. I mean a cell phone could do most anything a netbook can.

1. dual GPU is great so you can save up power when you don't need the super GPU
2. I use 14.1 inch screen and maybe it's bit too big i think 13 inch is probably better size 3. Atom processor is just junk i would get a celeron over an atom but then you don't want some super high end processor that will nuke off battery my laptop is 5yr old.... but still working well Centrino 1.7GHz single core, ATi mobility 7500, 1GB of RAM and 40GB 5400rpm hitachi HD overall can watch any 480p with ease but only 720i now it's hardly portable as my battery is super dead lol

I really love my Intel Core 2 Duo, ATi mobility x1400, 2gb ram, 120gb HDD
Can play just about anything including 1080p and can encode pretty well. Not bad considering i only spent 1k on it 3 years ago. Its kept up pretty well.
