Downloading problems

hey guys,

Im having real problems atm trying to download files with my orange 3g dongle. Its on unlimited downloads but every file I get freezes between 95-97%

Im on XP and I use firefox, and the downloadthemall addon. I have tried manual download without the addon but I get the same issue. Torrents are fine.

Its not to do with the size of the file because regardless of size they all stop in that area unless there under 20mb in size where it completes. So pictures and small programs are fine.

What Im actually trying to download is this patch:

Its a patch for runes of magic since the autoupdater failed as well.

Im out of ideas for what to try other than asking someone nicely if they can possibly make a torrent of it so I could get it that way.

If anyone has any ideas or can make a torrent of it for me it would be greatly appreciated because Im completly stuck.

Well, you should have a monthly allowance that you can't go over; or if you can you will have to pay ridiculous fees.

Also, there is a good chance there is a limit of how much you can download at one time on those mobile plans. A quick glance at Orange's site doesn't tell me what that limit would be.

see i first thought that, but checking the paperwork it says 'unlimited usage and download limit' ok it costs a bit more but still

As mentioned above its unlikely its the download limit anyway because its downloaded about 1.5gb then frozen on the last 4% on one file, then frozen on the 88mb patch at 96% as well. If it was a download limit it would be roughly the same amount they download before stopping.

Are there different servers hosting the patch?

Maybe try hitting "Resume" on one of the ones that got stopped in DownThemAll?


Find a wi-fi to plug in to and download it with that? =/ I don't have any personal 3g downloading experience, so that's about what I could offer from the few minutes I spent googling it.


You aren't moving around while you download this, right? Maybe you're getting a timeout for some reason.... And it happens on other files, too? Have you tried Internet Explorer? Just to see if it may be a Firefox issue or even a DownThemAll?

Strangley enough the original download i just wanted to complete, finally did the last 4% when it had timed out, i left it for a few hours then hit resume. I really expected it to stop again but i got lucky

Usually the resume button just said 0 bytes for download speed and it would eventually time out, regardless of other downloads going. I tried a few mirrors for the file but all same result, and the mirrors are reliable ones like rapidshare and filefront etc.

Theres no wi-fi connections in the area and I'm on a desktop though so arent moving around. I heard something about downloads stopping before because of the huewei dongles switching from 3g mode to HPDSA (or something like that) but I havent found any options to keep it on a certain connection anywhere.

And did you try Internet Explorer?


Is there any software you got with the dongle, which may be able to configure it to stay in 3g mode. If not, perhaps in the Properties for the device? (Like going into Device Manager and right clicking on the dongle and clicking properties)

I still feel it could be a time out thing, only because it is a 3g device but if it always happens at certain times it couldn't be that.

No broadband line at the minute because uncle didnt pay bill >.<

Internet explorer does same thing.

The software with the dongle is actually loaded on it, so when you plug it in it installs, however its beyond useless and the options on it often lead to the dongle not connecting to the net at all. I have checked all the properties and everything but theres nothing to pick connection mode, and even setting up a static IP address stops the dongle connecting (I know I set it right because I had it done with my old broadband connection and it was fine)

I really cant think of any reason why its stopping randomly if I run two downloads at once, one will stop and the other will carry on then stop but through seperate download programs, such as game clients or torrents theres no stops at all.

It must have been the crappy 3g dongle because I have my cabled modem back now and everything is fine :S
