L3 cache is mem sharing between the cores themselves. Ashur may be able to explain it better than me lol im still learning as i go.

if you dont need a quad core and want to save some money -> check out the intel E8400 (2x3 Ghz) its great for overclocking (mine runs at 2x4ghz)

bad intel chipset on i386, bad intel hardware on Pentium Pro Socket 8 system, more issues with PII system and its intel chipset, issues with RAM upgrade on Pentium I socket 7 not recognizing RAM properly crash and BSOD, another Intel chipset issues with 2200BG wireless & USB 2.0 problems on ThinkPad T42 over 50% of issued systems from over 200 laptops pool let's look at AMD and issues I had my brother wired it wrong and burnt out a super nice K6-2 400MHz but used to overperform a Pentium III AMD system death due horrible VIA chipset from Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard another system death due bad nForce Chipset which is made by nVidia video card death: none by ATi from nVidia GeForce 4 about 20% death from pool of 30 vid cards nVidia GF 6600 assembled by Jaton You're having issues with AMD system probably not because the processor but from the horrible company you bought didn't have proper cooling or bad chipsets made by VIA, nVidia or another manufacturer! | |

The only AMD processor I've had is on an HP... That was when they were first starting to use AMD excessively. The problem I had with that computer was not hardware... Twas software, Windows ME to be exact. ;'( I have been using a Pentium 4 since about five+ years, without problem. Granted I have been pretty good with cooling, and I've never overclocked. So, if you don't do stupid things to your CPU, it'll probablly last you awhile, until you feel like you need an upgrade. If I may: The CPU can directly access data in a heirarchy... Registers > Cache > Main Memory/RAM. The cache is pretty much the fastest memory your CPU can easily load instructions into. The registers are more or less a buffer point between the two. (If you exclude necessary registers, such as the PC or Exceptions register).

OK, the important thing to understand is about turbo mode. Quad cores suffer from low clock speeds. There are physical limitations to how much power (heat actually, well Voltage actually I think) a CPU can handle. This means a dual core of the same quality of a quad core could have its cores running about twice as fast. The NEW I7s, that is the lynnfields, have whats called turbo mode- the 860 and 870. This allows them to power down cores not in use and increase the clock speed of the cores in use. This provides a dramatic performance increase and I don't believe AMDs have released cores with there version of turbo mode yet. the 860 kind of kills the 920 in a lot of benches even. For a much better explanation and benchmarks, see anandtech ![]() AnandTech: The Intel Core i7 860 Review Not to say the phenom II x4s are not good. They are really fast and much cheaper. So if price is a concern they are still a good option. |
