There has been a lot of news since! I'll just ask everybody who's interested to join this group on Steam for now. Will update this thread with news as I come across it.

Ah, whatever, I can't be asked to find the sources, so I will do this from memory. There's a podcast where Gabe said that there's a portion of employees actively working on Linux now and that he himself has moved his desk to where that group is. Steam will arrive on Linux this year. Valve is also currently hiring experienced Linux developers (anybody with adequate Linux experience can apply, not just game developers). There should also be a Valve blog coming out sometime dedicated solely to their Linux efforts. Valve won't make a huge deal about it because this won't be affecting all Steam users, just those few who use Linux, and those will know about Steam coming to Linux anyway.

| Here's the official Linux blog from Valve. Steam’d Penguins explains where Valve wishes to head with Linux, while Faster Zombies! talks about how much better Left 4 Dead 2 is running on Linux with OpenGL as opposed to Windows with Direct3D.

The Steam Linux beta should appear fairly soon according to this video interview with Gabe.
