The plot chronicles the romantic misadventures of several individuals in their twenties and thirties. The common thread is that one person in each relationship is more "into" the other person than vice versa. At the core of these multiple stories is Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), a young woman who repeatedly misinterprets the signs that men give her about their level of interest in her. The more experienced and romantically successful Alex (Justin Long), the manager of a bar, advises her on how to understand men.

Other plotlines include married couple Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and Ben (Bradley Cooper), who are going through a rough patch—leading him to flirt with Anna (Scarlett Johansson), an aspiring singer. Anna, in turn, is dating Connor (Kevin Connolly), but is clearly less into him than he is into her. The final major plot arc is Neil (Ben Affleck) and Beth's (Jennifer Aniston) story. They have cohabited for several years, but break up when Beth desires to get married and Neil refuses.

Drew Barrymore, one of the film's producers, is also featured as a newspaper editor who helps Connor promote his real-estate business. She herself has trouble comprehending the semiotics of dating.

This is the first of what I consider a true "Chick Flick" I have wanted to see since... Bridget Jones? I love romance, but I'm not a Sex and the City, Mamma Mia (<-- what the hell was that?) kind of person. *puts on flame hat* Most of those people just seem like bitter and retarded, shallow old hags to me. But different strokes for different folks. Different ears and eyes for different gals and guys. Anyways...

Some of the characters here remind me of old college friends who went through bad relationship after bad relationship. A few turned to the actual self-help book that shares the film's title. I figure between being a shoulder for all of that and experiencing the universal themes of love and affection, this film might have heart-warming entertainment value. I also like a few of the actors involved, and the rest don't seem to be as annoying as they usually are. Hey, the standards reflect the fact that it's not typically my thing...

yeah, i stopped watching it when scarlet johansen and the other guy were talking about 4 catagories, i couldn't take anymore. but at least i can say that i tried.
