Default Movie News Thread

Ok, so I or Hitsu will post any news about upcoming movies that don't have enough info to have their own thread yet. This will have videos of interviews with directors, actors, producers, etc. I am not very good with words so all my info will come from a site that I love and ALL credit goes to them! They have all the latest movie news. If you would like to post something that you found, please go right ahead!

Here is the news from last week:

Disney Says Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Also Shooting Next Year
Quote:
So apparently there's something going on in San Diego this weekend called Comic-Con. Whatever that is. But there sure does seem to be a lot of news spewing forth from its sweaty, crowded depths. ComingSoon sat down with Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv yesterday to talk about, among other things, the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. And the news is very good. "We're going to shoot Pirates 4 in April and May of next year," Aviv said. "We are going to release it hopefully in 2011." Pirates 4 would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy," he says, and would be shot by itself, not back-to-back again.
There's no word yet if director Gore Verbinski will be back again for Pirates 4, but Aviv does admit that the whole franchise needs a bit of scaling down. "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger," Aviv said. "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." One thing's for certain, Captain Jack Sparrow will be swashbuckling his way back into theaters again come 2011. Are you excited?
Wanted 2 Starts Shooting Soon, But Who is Coming Back?
Quote:
The one-and-only Timur Bekmambetov has showed up a few panels during Comic-Con this week, and therefore some exciting updates on Wanted 2 have arrived. First off, SuperHeroHype reported that Mark Millar said the script was completed and they're starting shooting in eight weeks, though they later found out that this meant they were just going into pre-production in eight weeks. We already know that James McAvoy is back as Wesley Gibson, but in case there was any hesitation, Timur confirmed during the panel for Shane Acker's 9 today that he is back and and that they're preparing to shoot in the next few months.
Without spoiling too much, though, Timur did mention something else interesting during that panel. He said that they're trying to "wake up" Fox, the character that Angelina Jolie played, and that she might return (but isn't confirmed yet). I'm sure Universal wants her back - I would argue she was one of the big names that made it such a success in the end. But how could she come back if she died, though? Well, Timur says that she ended up in one of those healing wax baths - so maybe she didn't die? This is good news for fans of Wanted, as it looks like we could see this next summer. We'll keep you updated on Jolie's return as well!
Producers Promise a Dark Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie
Quote:
From their beginnings as a comic, through the years of video games and cartoons, various iterations of movies, and the amazing toy lines that have been produced, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always had a soft spot in many people's hearts. This year at Comic-Con marks the 25th anniversary of the TMNT, and the progression towards what fans really want in a new Turtles movie appears to be on the horizon. I was fortunate enough to be at the TMNT panel this afternoon, and we were able to get an early feel for what the new TMNT live-action film currently being written by John Fusco will be all about.
Producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker were on hand to answer a few questions about the new film, currently scheduled for a release sometime in 2011. "I love the Turtles. They have a special quality, the key is that we want to make the greatest Turtle movie ever," stated Walker, a response that was echoed by co-producer Mednick moments later. There is clearly a goal for TMNT, but what exactly is it? "In the world we live in today, in the golden age of superhero movies, we need to get back to where this all started."

I got the feeling from the producers that this will be somewhat of a Turtles origin story (which has been reported before). They were all very adamant about getting back to what the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in '90 did. "The interesting thing about TMNT was the combination of action and humor, and Steve Barron (director from the first Turtles movie) added one thing, heart. We want and need to go back to that. Let's make sure we don't dishonor what has been before, and let's create something new," added Mednick.

With these ideas in mind, the fans still wanted to know one thing - will TMNT follow the same path that other darker superhero movies have been going in the last few years. "Our point of view is this: go back and look at the original Turtles comics. They are very dark. The audience is much more sophisticated than they were in 1990. This is 2009. Take the new Harry Potter for example. It is rated PG and it's still a very dark film. We are headed that direction," Galen said. The fans cheered to this response, and there were smiles all around. For as little as we got today, it's obvious that there is a very bright light at the end of this tunnel.

As a Turtles fan, I am very excited to see what the future holds for this new movie. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about in the next few months. And of course, we'll always be the first to break any news for you.

Our friends over at USA Today scored a gaggle of new photos for Wes Anderson's upcoming stop-motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox. We previously featured some photos last week, however these give us a better look at the behind-the-scenes of it. All you need to know about the film can be found here, though the release date is now set for November 13th of this year. Among the photos are a few immersive stills of the characters (emoting quite impressively, I must say) and shots with Anderson himself arranging them to do his bidding in this expanded version of Roald Dahl's classic story. Definitely worth checking these out!

Of the story
, they say the film will include Wes Anderson trademarks such as a dysfunctional family and a male rivalry. Also, the four Fox children have been combined into just one misfit of a pup voiced by Jason Schwartzman
. Of Fantastic Mr. Fox, Schwartzman says it's "the ultimate." "It's funny, but also visually beautiful. Instead of adapting his style of directing to animation, [Anderson] brought animation to him. He made a Wes film." This doesn't surprise me, as Anderson seems to be rehashing the same themes in all of his films, all with varying degrees of success. Though I am excited to see how he tells this story his way.

G4's Gears of War Movie Interviews: Cliffy B and Len Wiseman FirstShowing.net
Quote:
While the rest of us at Comic-Con were in Hall H all day long, G4 spent their time talking with celebrities left and right. One of their latest features is an interview set with both Gears of War video game designer Cliff Bleszinski and the director of the upcoming movie, Len Wiseman. We've heard lots about this proposed Gears of War movie, but not that it was actually happening anytime soon. However, from the sounds of it (and this video), it seems like it's creeping along inches at a time, and finally getting close to moving into production. With that said, take a look at what Cliffy B and Wiseman had to say about the project. Read on!

(psp's note: you can go here for the video as well: Gears of War Movie Preview - G4tv.com)

Obviously neither of these guys reveal too much about the movie, like casting or shooting details, since I'm sure nothing is solid yet. If you're curious to read up more about the story or more details, hit up either of these posts: Locusts in the Movie or Chris Morgan's May Update. I have a feeling that New Line / Warner Brothers still wants this as a 2010 release. I'm with Cliffy B, too, I hope this is one of the first true kick ass video game adaptations. And if it follows up the Prince of Persia movie next summer, that might just be the case. Hopefully we'll hear some new details (and casting) on this soon, because I'm getting a bit impatient.

First Look: Mickey Rourke in Sly Stallone's The Expendables

Its been a while since we last saw anything from The Expendables, which I believe is already finished shooting (and if it isn't yet, it will be finished soon). However, Empire has the newest shot, featuring a burly Mickey Rourke tattooing the back of Sylvester Stallone. Rourke has been showing up in movies left and right since winning everyone over again in The Wrestler. I don't know if he just has a brief cameo in the movie (and this is it that we're seeing) or whether he'll show up later on, tattooing more of the Expendables team. Either way, this is pretty damn cool to see, so check out the photo below and more info as well. Dig it!

Empire explains that Rourke is the "arms dealer and part-time tattooist" named Tool who is inking Barney Ross, the character Stallone plays, with the skull and raven tattoo seen on the poster. So he's an arm dealer, that must mean we might see more of him when he arms up everyone at other times in the movie (or so I hope that happens). We're also hoping we get to see a trailer for this sometime soon, but we haven't heard anything about when that'll show up online. And as always, you can check out other photos and video from earlier. Of course, stay tuned for more on The Expendables as it arrives! Is everyone still excited for this?

And here are those posters they were talking about:

Robert Schwentke Directing Summit's 'Red' Comic Book Movie

Would you want to see a comic book movie directed by the guy who did Flightplan and The Time Traveler's Wife? No wait, don't answer that. It's a loaded question and I want to give Robert Schwentke the benefit of the doubt on this one. According to THR, Schwentke is in negotiations to directing Summit's big screen comic book adaptation of WildStorm's Red, written by Warren Ellis. Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman are already attached to star, with a screenplay by Whiteout's Erich and Jon Hoeber. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing. Schwentke is also attached to Conspiracy of Fools at Warner Bros.
The three-issue comic series, first published in 2003, tells the story of a former black-ops CIA agent now living a quiet life in retirement until the day a high-tech assassin shows up to kill him. With his secret identity compromised and his love interest in danger, the man must reassemble his old team to figure out who is out to get them. The Hoebers' take involves the idea of an older operative set in his ways having to contend with younger agents as well as modern technology. I'm looking forward to seeing what Schwentke can do with this. At least I hope it'll have good action, because what would a spy movie be without that?

Sony Adapting the inFAMOUS Video Game into a Movie

Either the video game movie trend is picking up again in the next few years, or this is just leftover news from Comic-Con. Sony Pictures has pre-emptively picked up a pitch to adapt the inFAMOUS video game into a feature film. inFAMOUS, which hit shelves last May, centers on bike messenger Cole MacGrath, who survives an explosion that destroys a large part of Empire City only to find that he has new electricity-derived super powers. The game, designed for Sony's PlayStation 3, allows the player to use his powers for good or evil, as MacGrath's karma affects how the city's people and infrastructure deal with him. Read on!
Screenwriter Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard, Up in the Air) will be writing the screenplay. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will produce. "What excited me most about the game was it was the first of which I've come across that had a big idea and a character arc," Turner said. "It is, I believe, the future of gaming. The game, while big and fun, is at its core a love ballad to the underachiever, which is what our hero, Cole McGrath, is." I haven't personally played the game, however the photos from it look pretty cool and it sounds like a good concept. Of course, let's hope they do a good job adapting it, because most video game movies (still) suck.

Paul W.S. Anderson Adapting Peter V. Brett's The Warded Man

What is Paul W.S. Anderson butchering next? First off, he might return to direct Resident Evil: Afterlife, but after that, why not some fantasy? THR reports that Anderson and his producing partner Jeremy Bolt have picked up film rights to Peter V. Brett's fantasy novel "The Warded Man." Anderson is attached to direct and will produce with Bolt. The book is set in an "undetermined future" where mankind is beset by nightly attacks from demonkind and has been thrown into a feudal state. Three young people emerge with the potential power to turn the tide, including a man who has wards (aka spells) tattooed on his body.
"It launched in the U.K. six months earlier than in the U.S., and we got wind of it when it was in galley form before the U.K. release. We think it has the potential to be a new Lord of the Rings-style epic, and the book has all this great imagery," Anderson said. I don't know, I don't think someone like Paul W.S. Anderson would be able to make anything even remotely as good as Lord of the Rings. I mean, enjoyed Death Race, and I think Pandorum looks good (Bolt and Anderson also produced that), but I don't have the highest hopes for "The Warded Man." In the meantime, if you want to read the novel, you can pick it up right here.

It seems like there's going to be a lot of action and it's going to be mostly in the night time seeing as how it is supposed to be an assassin movie

Dr. Seuss Book The Lorax to Become a 3D Animated Movie

Just in case that Horton Hears a Who! movie wasn't enough, Universal has teamed up with Illumination Entertainment to adapt another Dr. Seuss book, this time The Lorax, into a 3D CGI animated feature (just like Horton). First published back in 1971, The Lorax is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, strips a forest of its stock of Truffula trees to manufacture clothing. The results are catastrophic as all the animals leave and nothing's left. Universal's feature version of this will be co-directed by three different directors: Chris Renaud (Despicable Me), Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.
"Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) was prescient in an uncanny way when he wrote the book and explored themes of greed and how that can lead to the destruction of environment," Illumination's Chris Meledandri told Variety. Meledandri was the same person who developed Horton Hears a Who! at Fox before he formed Illumination, so you might as well think of this as the unofficial follow-up. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio also signed a four year writing and directing deal after writing Horton and Despicable Me. The Lorax movie is scheduled for release on March 2nd, 2012, which is the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss, who died in 1991.

Don't Worry, Star Trek 2 Won't Be Like Transformer 2!

I'm probably stepping onto thin ice here, but this is worth mentioning only for fun, not for real news. Sci-fi site io9 caught up with screenwriter Roberto Orci on the red carpet of the Entertainment Weekly party at Comic-Con (which I was also at). Their brief conversation focused slightly on Transformers 2, then jumped to Star Trek 2. As was announced previously, Orci and writing partner Alex Kurtzman are writing the sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. They also wrote Transformers 2, which despite earning $382 million at the box office, hasn't settled well with critics or fans. But you don't have to worry, Star Trek 2 will be very different.

Quote:
"Star Trek 2 is different in that you have a crew that's committed to what they're doing, and so that's going to lead you to different kinds of storytelling. These people are not reluctant heroes, they're hoping to get out there and do what's right."
What I'm trying to say here is that you shouldn't be so worried about Kurtzman and Orci writing the Trek sequel. If you're one of those people who didn't like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at all, but loved Star Trek, and are now worried about Star Trek 2 because of Transformers, well, don't be worried! It's a completely different franchise and, even at the base, is an entirely different kind of story, as Orci said. If anything, this just proves how versatile Kurtzman and Orci can be. And how much influence a director like Michael Bay has on the story in the end. I'm still very excited to see what they'll cook up for us in Trek 2!

Worth Watching - July 29: Baader Meinhof Complex Trailer

Last year we featured a trailer for a German film called Der Baader Meinhof Komplex. It later went on to become nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar even though it still hasn't officially hit US theaters. Vitagraph Films is now bringing The Baader Meinhof Complex to theaters and has debuted an official US trailer (and poster) for the film over on Cinematical. This looks pretty incredible and considering it was good enough to get an Oscar nomination, I'm definitely interested in checking it out. Plus, any trailer that uses The Who's "My Generation" in a great way just deserves some props anyway. Watch this trailer!

Watch the official US trailer for The Baader Meinhof Complex:

The Baader Meinhof Complex, aka Der Baader Meinhof Komplex, is directed by German filmmaker Uli Edel, of numerous German made-for-TV movies as well as Last Exit to Brooklyn and The Little Vampire. The screenplay was written by Hollywood producer Bernd Eichinger, of The Downfall and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer previously, and is based on Stefan Aust's book of the same name. The Baader Meinhof Complex, which was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar this year, is being distributed in the US by Vitagraph Films. It's expected to arrive in very limited theaters starting on August 21st later this year.

First Brilliant Trailer for the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man

They just don't stop! The Coen Brothers are already back again with yet another black comedy, titled A Serious Man, following up their CIA black comedy Burn After Reading last year. Out of nowhere comes the first trailer for A Serious Man straight from Apple. Up-and-coming actor Michael Stuhlbarg stars in the lead role as well as funny man Richard Kind as his brother. You probably won't recognize too many people in this, which is probably a good thing. Considering it's the Coen Brothers, they've got some crazy, twisted, dark comedy up their sleeves, so why not let some incredibly talented unknown actors take center stage.

Watch the trailer for the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man:

You can also watch the trailer for A Serious Man in High Definition on Apple

A black comedy set in 1967 and that centers on Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern professor who watches his life unravel when his wife prepares to leave him because his inept brother won't move out of the house.

A Serious Man is both written and directed by the brillaint Oscar winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, of Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, and Burn After Reading. This was shot last year in Minnesota after they finished Burn After Reading. Focus Features will be debuting A Serious Man in limited theaters on October 9th.
