"The world's first genetically-modified humans have been created," so says this article from the Daily Mail: World's First GM Babies Born Anyone up for a Gundam Seed plot? But seriously, the babies born had three sets of DNA instead of the normal two: one from a male parent and a set each from two females, the mother and another female whose genes had to be inserted into the mother's egg because she had trouble conceiving. And this is the main reason why the genetically-modified babies came to be. Their parents couldn't conceive because the mother's eggs were too weak, so genes from another, healthier female were used and inserted to boost 'em up. Hence, three sources of DNA. These babies will grow up normal, I'm assuming, for the most part, and will pass on this new DNA trait to their children. Future applications of genetic modification of this level are under "raging" debate. I want to be a Coordinator. Too late for that?

I approve of the Whip it! generation ![]() Well, as long as things don't go the way of "Gattaca", I'm all for genetic modification. But not really for the large scale, I mean it's our genetic diversity that makes humans interesting, by stopping certain people from inheriting illnesses they otherwise would have gotten you remove obstacles from their path that would have otherwise strenghtened that individual. Though humans don't necessarily need suffering to become good people, that's just my Catholic upbringing rearing it's voice. In truth, if you can prevent a child's suffering all effort should be made to do so. Designer babies on the other hand sounds like a bad idea, parents should not be able to alter their child's looks to that extent. People are crazy and will take it to extremes "for fashion". On an individual level it would be okay though, like the Splicing from Batman Beyond. |

That's the truth of it, isn't it? When more significant and beneficial avenues of genetic modification are available, we could still expect largely superficial designer babies instead. I do like minute Splicing (yes, as in Batman Beyond), but if it's all form and no function it'll probably just end up annoying me.
