The inflexible thing made me wrinkle my brows too. But you hear mildly racist comments like that fairly often in most japanese sports. Especially from older folks. Seems like a cultural inferiority complex. Hopefully it's disappearing as the decades wear on.
Race is a local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics. Certain things hold true most of the time. Asians have narrower eyes, blacks have bigger lips, whites have more upright noses, and so on. It's not racist. What's racist is stereotyping a group by saying all Japanese people are good at martial arts or they're all suicidal and weird. Talking about physical attributes does not fit that description. You're over thinking it.
i've noticed the racist comments in this anime, and other sports anime for that matter. it's common and it stopped bothering me because i now just take it as the special talent the individual worked hard for and was born with and ignore the nationality all together.
So, you're agreeing with the stereotype that Japanese people are inflexible, saying that's how they're built, when flexibility has absolutely nothing to do with biological factors like race (and usually is a big part of martial arts, by the way, since you used that example), and using that logic as an excuse to say that it's not racist? You know, being blind to racism is just as bad as blatant racism. I remember earlier in the comments when the show introduced Ozuma, people were getting bent out of shape because some said they were taking a racist view, by implying he had to be a deadly boxer
(cont'd) because he was black. A lot of people argued it out, ignoring the blatancy of the examples given in the episode, like Aoki and Kimura talking to each other about what they would do if they had to fight a black boxer. Judging someone's ability to do something, whether good or bad, is racism. And I feel like a lot of the problems with race are because people feel like they can say what is and isn't offensive, when they're not part of the people being stereotyped. The one on the receiving end is the only one who can determine that, and it's different from every individual. You shouldn't
(cont'd) have to try and justify why something shouldn't be taken a certain way, because if it already has been, then it's too late. Words can't be taken back, but excuses can always be made up. That means watch what you say. I really have been trying to hold back a rant on race, but you people are acting so oblivious to obvious things that it's a little scary. Dismissing things like that is what leads to seeing blatant racism and just shrugging it off. I'm not saying freak out over every little thing, but at least be aware of what's going on people. (takes deep breath) Alright, I'm done.
Actually... @Juno36, most countries view things Racially as most are majorly filled with one specific Race. Also, each race DOES have different physical bonuses and negatives, just like they have different features. A good example is in boxing, you MUST take race into consideration or you will lose a fight through ignorance. For one thing, if you are going to fight a boxer who is Mexican, be prepared for a lot of fast and high endurance punching from odd angles, its a specialty of their flexibility, just as black boxer usually has more physical strength for short strikes like a hook or upper. In fact, I think your assumption that they are racist by talking about what they would do if they faced a black boxer, to be highly racist.
Assuming things while using someone's race as an excuse for the assumption is racism. The abilities of the boxer are not determined by their races, but by how they were trained, and THAT varies from area to area. It would be more accurate to say that people from a certain country exhibit different strengths. Whether more people of a certain race come from this area is a completely different subject. However, I can assure you that being black does not give you more physical strength. And, in fact, when you're scared of a person solely because he's black, that is a sign of racism. But, a racist
(cont'd) thought doesn't necessarily make someone racist. A racist is someone who acts and behaves according to those thoughts. But, as someone said up there, we're all here to watch anime, right? This is a damn good show, and this is my second time watching it, so I think I'll get back to it.
