Maybe if Sendo had actually killed someone in the ring Ippo's fear would make sense. As is it isn't very convincing. That was a frustrating episode.

Ippo's fear is a very aggravating plot device I've nicknamed "Here comes the swollen face." It happens in every match and it is very frustrating in all occasions. Ippo's style of victory from the beginning has always been "miraculous come from behind victory." THe authors had it easy when Ippo was a beginner because then it was very easy to BELIEVABLY put him in a desperate spot (marked by his swollen face and beat up body) while his opponent is still going strong.

However, as Ippo has progressed, he has gained the skill to match up against almost anyone. So even if he gets horribly beat up,

he can make sure the same applies to the opponent (hence not a desperate situation). This does not a "miraculous come from behind victory" make. The authors need to find a way to make Ippo take high amounts of damage and fight like crap so it looks like he is about to lose. they can't slow him down and make him worse for no reason as this would contradict the training he does, so what do they do?

The destroy his character development (making him a beginner in his mind) and pump him full of insecurities that come out of nowhere. What happened to the passion of wanting to settle things with Se

What happened to the passion of wanting to settle things with Sendo? Why did he forget he already won once? Sure Sendo is stronger, but so is he. No one knows. In this state, he fights really bad, gets his ass whooped like there is no tomorrow untile the author deems his is in that "despereate spot" then out of nowhere, we flip the switch, and Ippo is back as he should have been the entire round. Of course he is back after 2 rounds punches to the face and "He so amazing and I suck, I can't win" so beat up that the only way he can win(against an opponent that is not nearly as damaged) is with a

single, well placed, and dramatic punch; cue the desired "miraculous victory." Pack up, go home, and do this all over again the next match.

It's gotten to the point that I pretty much tune out while this is happening and pay attention to the beginning and the ending of the fights, skipping "Here comes the swollen face" syndrome.

I don't understand all theses comments. When a person builds up confidence and they have a plan and it all falls apart, people start becoming insecure. They lose sight of who they were. It doesn't contradict training because training is not synonymous with victory. Ippo's not fighting like crap. Sendo is fighting a like a maniac. It's easy to speculate on things we're not involved with and are just watching, but in the moment it's a whole different story. Sure, it's a predicable, however, it can't be too one-sided.

this episode wasnt that bad. god i swear ill never read the comments b4 i watch the episode cuz these stupid comments just ruin the episode

this sh*t... makes no F***ING SENSE! while Hajime no Ippo is my 3rd favorite anime of all time (1st: FMAB, 2nd: depends on how Naruto ends) Ippo EASILY grabs the #1 spot for most annoying Main Character of all time. i'm starting to think he's doing this sh*t on purpose...
