i think they added ussops part because people didnt like him enough. this filler was to deepen our love for ussop.

Man, if Ussopp really loved that ship so much, i would have told him that he's torturing it by trying to keep it alive, its a dieing ship pretty much, and that a way for him to keep it alive was use its parts in the creation of a new ship, then the whole Luffy gang can stay together and be happy =)

Man, this is depressing cuz of Merry and Robin AND Usopp leaving the Strawhats crew!

Usopp wants to keep the Merry so badly because it's the only thing that made him feel useful. He knows he isn't a strong fighter and he has no purpose in navigation or anything. But he has been able to repair their ship and keep it going strong to this point... basically, if they get rid of the Merry it makes him feel like everything he has done was worthless. I feel for him. He is a great character and awesome nakama.
