I agree with that, I don't see that it's any more or less likely that Elen did it, but it's fairly clear imo that it was one of them.

Really though no need to get mad about things, just take a chill pill and think through it calmly. I still think Elen was the one to pull the trigger, but it was just as much Reiji's choice for it to happen so the person who did it doesn't matter much.

The point is they were both ready to die and it was their choice not an outside force. Which made it a good ending.

Oh, sorry bout that one ^-^' 's just that in 53 comments I hadn't ever seen even one with the same theory as me so I kinda got frustrated for a bit.
Glad you can see my point atleast ^-^

Meh, sorry for the deleted comments, had some trouble with that long post. ^_^

But yeah him killing himself works out too. I don't know that's it's any more or less likely than Elen killing him. But I think there's no doubt it was one of the two of them.

ahha. LoL wtf. Reiji dies and Elen doesn't even notice or care :DD GOD! The ending sucked like hell. I would've been more pleased if Elen had died, or they had both lived happily ever after or some ****.

Horrible horrible ending, And please don't assume its horrible because i wanted it to end in happy ending. The reason why the ending is epic fail is because the phantoms were built thoughout the episodes to be such a great unstoppable force, human prodigys who could take on many people. The were the best, enough to rule the underworld to make a smaller organization such as inferno stand out and take dominance over the other mafia's. And then he gets shot by an old guy in a cart with a donkey/goat type thing.

AND PLEASE stop comparing this to code geass, Code geass was pure brillance and genius the ending to the anime was p-e-r-f-e-c-t.

Just adding 2 more facts.

1)There is no way that Elen would have killed him.Not even a chance.
2)There is no way that Reiji commited suicide.When the carriage passes by he doesnt even blink.

NOOOOo Ceol don't leavee mee XD
But by the way it would've made more sence if it was an assasination if he did blink, I mean he IS a pro assasin himself.

Elen shoots Reji. It's a Japanese anime for a Japanese audience - Suicide can be honourable in Japan. Honour killing. This ending wouldnt surprise many Japanese infact it would make alot of sense. Although most of us Westerners don't get it. If the old man in the cart killed Reji, Elen would have done something. Doesnt make sense how an assasin would have known exactly where they would be and have a cart set-up. No sniper in the grass either because Reji and Elen would have easilly spotted him. Reji knowingly took the shot, and he didnt seem surprised. Elen looked back smiling, she wasnt surprised at all. The last shot of her lying in the grass is her dead after commiting suicide by eating the petal of the purple flower. They both died at their happiest. Who can blame them. I'm starting to understand the Japanese mind a little more.............

ok that was a good theory uiku but as you can see at the end u did not see any blood from the head and there was no gun on him so i really dont think he kill himself and for being a sin you would knoe shootin the head would be the perfect place to end a life and one more thing he stood up to long if he shot himself ....

well one of the interesting points of this series is that you often don't saw blood when important characters died. Not with Cal, Lizzy, or Claudia, so it would make sense not to show blood with reji

MASSIVE SPOILERS....

I dont understand chobits, how do you know Elen shot him because I saw no gun, and how do you know the purple flower was poisonous?

P.s that ending made me depressed...

Okai... Thers alot of discussion goin
and remember i posted about 5 endings for people to choose.
i went to all my forums and asked my friends in japan to confirm my choice
#2...
as ther is a small otaku group formed for "Phantom of """inferno""" THE MANGA they decided to go directly and ask
but as always the author didnt reply
so far its no claifications but best assumption is #2
suicide is barely an answer and "elen not being able to kill" reiji
has a 80% chance
---Facts
-Quote elen- she wants to "live with him for a little longer" states sumthing that relates to the ending from my perspective. Also "plz first go to hell" thing lol
-the missing Flower petal
-Reiji's granted promise
-ther internal diologue inside ther heads
-the song about phantoms being non existant and the stupid "TTTRAAAANSPARENT" thing
-and more that i dont hav the time to post
---Confusions
-The Cart
-The Inferno leader
-The strong luv b2een them
-Shiga
However as anime writers aren't lazy... lazy endings such as inferno assasinating has a weaker possibility.
I'm not trying to convince anybody but i hav had many verification from forums and my people in the otaku district and !!! > I < Believe this is the best solid ending this anime can hav from the options given

aniways -- like this site :] just found it to watch and its pretty useful thxs for uploads of raw

I think they both planned on it. <br>
1. Elen did not question Reiji suddenly walking away, or even take notice of it<br>
2. The missing petal seems to indicate Elen is dead. The imagery would be completely pointless for any other reason. Unless it is to be interpreted that Reiji is missing from Elen's life now. But that ending would just suck. And the fact Elen is completely motionless at the end..yeah<br>
<br>
3. The rule of stories. The story is set in this world.(whether modern or in history) In stories set in this world of average mortals anything that escapes the mortal realm must be separated or destroyed at the end of the story. Scythe Master can not live because he has the ability to make superhuman assassins that surpass any other normal human being. As such, Elen and Reiji must also die because they are essentially invincible and therefor above the mortal scope. They have no place in the average world. All superhuman interventions must be brief and disappear, it's a rule of thumb.
It goes back to greek Mythology. The concept that the hero must fall. Power never lasts.
<br>
<br>
Though honestly I would have preferred them to life, in a way their deaths have more meaning and defy simple wishful thinking. <br>
<br>
It was a very good series, I'ma miss it. :)

Man this ending was just as sad as Code Geass T_T I still don't understand why Reiji wanted to die and what promise is he talkin bout. Man Cal, Reiji, and then Elen everyone died T_T
Phantom- Requiem for the Phantom Episode 26 Loosends

The ending is bad and rushed plain and simple. All endings proposed make no sense what so ever.
Assassination- If Reiji was killed, why not Elen in the same fashion? And like Arkk mentioned earlier these guys are the Phantoms all the battles they've been involved in, all the training... there is no way Reiji would not have in a way "sensed" someone out to kill them. For him to be killed in such a... simple and "gay" way is crazy. Why would Elen not here the silenced shot (silencers can still be heard, also they were in the quiet countryside, no cars or anything. She was also not that far away) or the thud from his body dropping. Why wouldn't she run to help?... continued...

Suicide is even more ridiculous. Why go though ALL what they did to kill themselves?? Think about the beginning of the anime... Reiji is FORCED to kill and he is trying to escape. Its not like these guys are in their 40's and 50's. Reiji was caught around 15 yrs of age. He should be about 19. Why in the would should these KIDS kill themselves? Lol. Think about it. Why would Elen kill herself after finally finding were she is from? After finally finding love? Why would Reiji (as few posted earlier) LET someone (Elen) kill him?? Sounds completely retarded. If they were going to kill themselves they should have done it before killing all people they were made to. This isn't a samurai anime based in the 1700s. Suicide even then was honorable when your were caught by the enemy or failed to complete your assignment. Not when you FINALLY are free from your prison and have a chance to redeem yourself. Them killing themselves is like running from the chance to make everything right. This makes them look cowardly.
------
However, they both are dead. This is seen in the anime. Reiji was obviously shot by the guy on the carriage and Elen eats a purple flower (lmfao) because a petal is shown missing. Whoever said Reiji was killed by Elen... pttfff. Her attire doesn't look as if she had a gun on her (short shorts). And she was in front of him. If he was shot from the front he should have fell backwards. This something I also found annoying the way he stood from another 5 seconds WITHOUT no sound or motion after being shot...

But yeah I still love the anime. The ending... eh. I believe if the characters were destined to die they should have been kill in a firefight with Master's assassins. Not them dying without each other knowing they were dead...

I'm not going to argue it was a rushed ending, it probably was. Especially with Reiji's ultimatum of killing to live. What I'm going to say is you're kind of ignoring the whole theme of the anime: the corrupt character development. When he was 15 he was young and naive, far from ready to die. As the anime went on you saw him get colder and colder to the point he was barely human. He started to awaken but had to go right back to that inhuman self he was.
Now if you think in terms of stress, the underworld in itself and the stress it gave could easily have taken the toll to make them feel like they were fifty or older. Prolonged stress ages people. Just look at the president. Each and every president has left term with white hair. You can even see the greying process over their years in office. It's even happening to obama now. (and it's not just because they're old to begin with)
But yes, the ending is too easy. It contradicts other parts of the story but it isn't completely unreasonable either. They both finished and got the last things they wanted out of life and supposedly didn't want to live with the guilt of killing countless men, woman, and children. They fought scythe master because he did what he did to them, they found elens home because she wanted to see it before she died. They're deaths against the others would have no meaning. Their deaths in a beautiful field under a blue sky has some remote meaning.
