Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was my favourite 2009 anime. Why did I like it so much? It was very, very realistic and emotional. The earthquake and reactions to the disaster were so genuine that, at times, I honestly felt it was a real-life show converted into animation.
The animation is smooth and the graphics are simple yet effective. My only complaint would be that the art is a little TOO simple, but it is more than sufficient to tell the story. I actually found myself enjoying the graphics; recent anime have flashy effects and advancing techniques, but Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 reminds me that a show doesn’t have to be outstandingly pretty to be a good watch.
Don’t head into this anime thinking that it’s shallow, because it’s anything but. It’s informative, deep, and has a lot more to the story than the protagonists’ journey home. This anime secured my 100% mostly because of the ending. It’s one of the best - probably THE best - that I have seen so far. If you start this anime, make sure you see it to the end - you won’t regret it!.
