Kakurenbo is definitely worth the time- it’s only about half an hour. Its length works against it too though- I feel like it could use another half hour to explain things more. It’s sort of like the people making it had a great idea that they just wanted to make, but didn’t put as much time into developing the story. As it is, the ending is a bit confusing and strange.

I think there’s definitely more to this movie than its face value, so don’t take it too literally. After all, how realistic is that many kids disappearing constantly without any parents creating a commotion? In fact, where are the parents?! There are so many questions remaining that couldn’t possibly be fit into such a short time. However, this ambiguity adds a captivating creepiness to the whole show.
