Lacking, Pointless, Disappointing
This movie is essentially a 2 hour long AMV without the music. It transitions from fight scene to fight scene with absolutely no plot or character development. Most of the transitions don’t even have real transitions. They are in one place fighting and then suddenly they are in another battle.
There are also many implied growths and scenes that have absolutely no valid explanation. Suddenly the main character just becomes more powerful, or a servant isn’t actually dead, or a fight scene is resolved. You can make the argument that it may have been explained in the manga or in the show, but what then is the purpose of the movie? To be effective, it should stand alone and be able to hold its own ground. We should be able to understand why characters make the choices they do or how one scene leads to another. The entire dialogue of the movie also just consists of one-liners and lackluster empowerment speeches.
The makers could easily have removed a pointless fight scene or 2 to work on a little bit of depth to this shallow film. Instead, it turned out to be a movie that crammed together an entire series worth of information (or, mainly, an entire series worth of fights) with a corny and out of place ending.
A huge letdown. Don’t even waste your time watching this terrible movie. The only reason I gave it 50% was because of the scene where the girl gets her heart ripped out, which is freakin epic. But that alone does not qualify this as anything but a hodgepodge of pointless violence. Watch the series if you haven’t. I’m going to recommend you pretend this movie doesn’t exist, as I am.
