Description: Growing out of the chaos of a global war, the city of Utopia is populated by humans and bioroids (artificial humans). On the surface, everything is harmonious, but tensions lurk. Into this seemingly perfect society comes a survivor of the wars, Deunan Knute, who carries a legacy that will turn out to be of critical importance to the future of humanity.(from ANN)
maybe bad animation... but not THAT bad

After years of war that had ended unknowingly to her, Deunan Knute is escorted to Olympus, where she is technically a citizen there. She meets her old lover, Briareous, who (also unknowingly to her) had acquired a fully prosthetic body due to serious injuries. Both Deunan and viewers have this WTF moment, going: "how the heck do you spell your name?" and "WTH is with those bunny ears?!?!"
Deunan then goes on her way with her new friend Naomi in Olymus, and is introduced to the concept of Bioroids, a genetically modified human species created without negative feelings such as jealousy and hatred to promote peace, as well as every current religious sect and bioethicist’s worst nightmare. Deunan is faced with some conspiracy with this peace-loving city Olympus, suddenly realizing that it isn’t as much of a Utopian as people think it is.
Alright, before you all complain about how bad the CG is, let me point out two things: First, it’s APPLESEED which equals Masamune Shirow, which equals insane mecha. The animation for the mecha is not bad at all, so we can’t complain. Secondly, the second appleseed movie, EX MACHINA, the animation improves tenfold, so it’s all jolly good. Now go watch it.
If you’re familiar with Masamune Shirow’s work (so if you’ve seen and fallen in love with Ghost in the Shell), you’ll probably enjoy Appleseed. It does put some pretty ethical questions, especially the idea of Bioroids and this "Utopian city". Something you can actually get away writing an english essay on. Or if you just like to see lots of explosions and guns and really cool mecha flying around, you’ll enjoy this as well.
But if you don’t like it, well, on the bright side, it’s only a movie….
