In my opinion this is where the split happened.  The third season extends greatly on an explanation of the world they live in, much like season two did, but the creators didn’t do a good job capturing that.  It felt like they just made fifty new episodes while watchin the first eighty and used different cities and Pokemon.  Pokemon as a world has become so detailed and valid on the aspects of the species and the human cultures that you see in the video games and shows that they’ve even made Pokemon who created the universe ... that’s deep.  But the reason they fall is because they made this amazing, vast world and didn’t go into the detail it deserved.  Not in the games, not in the shows, it truely lacked the very essence they created it to have.  Luckily, some of those Pokemon fanatics around the world have created things that sum up everything that the creators drop the ball on.  They’ve made full fledged maps of the world, lists of every Pokemon, lists of all the Pokemon our main characters have had, list of every badge and award they’ve earned, and hell they even made a timeline of all the events that have been laid out by the creators, almost unintentionally.  It’s because of this that the creators still have a great opportunity to make an all the way game that lets you explore every inch of the Pokemon world, and they still have a chance to create a season that backtracks Ash’s adventures and let’s him go to find the answers that were never answered before.  Will they take this opportunity, probably not because money wouldn’t be there in the long run for them, but oh well, it’s nice to dream. :)
